steering lock up!!!!

hey all. I hhave a problem with my 96 ss. If I sit and try to turn the wheel it creaks and groans and studders and stops and sometimes just locks up. Only does it at a stand still. Driving is perfect. Very responsive. I've checked the ps fluid and put condisioner in it. I don't know what to do... thanks!

Check your water pump and see if its leaking on the belt. A failing water pump will leak water out of the weep hole on the bottom and it will cause the belt to slip.

I will check that out. I hope that would be that and not something major. Would a slipping belt cause nasty screechy noises and lock ups?

You might be luckier having the screechy noise. A new belt, even a new WP, is still way easier than a PS pump replacement.

Its a weird noice. Not like a belt slip screech but a metal noise...
