Newest thread I find with any detail is nearly 6 years old now. So...
Tuesday at auction, there's a jacked up red Avalanche. I did a quick walk around and it was rough, but it had a clean interior and new wheels and tires. Then I looked closer. No push buttons for 4x4. No shifter sticking out of the floor. So I turned the wheels to lock, though I already knew, and sure enough, a jacked up two wheel drive...3/4 ton... 'lanche. Useless as tits on a boar, especially as rough as it was.
Fast forward a few hours and I am gathering up the day's (cheap, crappy) score and getting ready to leave when the Avalanche rolls up to the A lane doors and I get to talking to the would-be buyer. He bid it off at 3K. Cheap enough. Seller wants 3500. I asked if he knew it was 2wd...his face about fell off. Then he asked me if I knew it was an 8100. Hmmm.
So this AM I get a call asking if I want the truck for 3k and I said sure. I can't buy an 8100, 4L80e and comp/harness for that so why not. I'll let it sit on the lot for a while and if it doesn't sell I'll scrap it, thinks I. Easy...
So NOW it's sitting at a gas station on 41 south of Terre Haute because one reason they were willing to sell it cheap is the brakes. They really work. They work so well they work on their own and make 3 of four rotors glow. So yeah, the truck is definitely getting turned into parts. I'm not spending hundreds on brake work when I can yank the drivetrain sell the remaining bits for damn near enough to pay for itself.
Free 8100...works for me.
It also renews my interest in the 94 Fleetwood, which has been sitting untouched since thieves stole and totalled my 95. I just lost interest in the whole body style after that. Sold the Roadmaster, too. Had the 'vette and the 64 Caddy to hold my interest since then, but 496 cubes in a Caddy? Yeah, I can get into that. So, who's done it recently and how much has the aftermarket come up with support for this engine since 2010 or so? Other than the obvious; cam, springs, rockers, tune, headers what does it even need to be a monster on low end (the only place I will ever have time or room to play)? Anybody got a turbo on one?
Oh, and does anybody needs some Avalanche parts? :grin2:
