LS4 Engine Conversion (96 impala ss)

With gas getting so high in certain areas one thing that has been coming to mind was an engine swap. Have a 96 impala ss project and always wanted to do an LS1 or LS2 conversion. With the new SS motor (LS4) with the active fuel management system.... wanted to know if this conversion could be done in the 96 impala. What transmission could bolt up to this engine for a rear wheel application.

not worth it... just buy a honda! the money you will have in the swap will negate any money you save on gas

Not sure if you could swap the LS4 as it's transversely mounted. If you're going LSX, get an LS2 or LQ9 but don't expect better mileage, just more power.

I've heard LS engines actually do get good mpg with basic mods. I wouldn't do a swap just for the mileage though...
There are various versions but i'm pretty sure the ls4 won't swap into our cars.
Not that many ls swapped cars out there but most of the information you're looking for is probably in the LS Swap Sticky at the top of this section. Just sayin

LS4 has a different bolt pattern for the 4T65E. The 4L60E won't bolt up to it. There are numerous other quirks with that swap (intake manifold limits, etc). It would be ALOT more money than it's worth.

The LS4 has the BOP trans bolt pattern which you could get the adapter for from Summit or Jegs. The LS4 comes with the LS6 intake and 243 heads which are good starting points. If you wanted some extra power then a cam swap, headers, and a tune would be beneficial. As for the mpg's of a LS series I can vouch for it being better, my Caprice is averaging between 21-23mpg's with cam, headers, 3:73's and 20's.

The Active Fuel Management is a joke. I have it in my 5.3 truck, and I'm going to disable it. It only stays in 4-cylinder mode under extremely light loads, such as going down hill.

If you are going to do an LS swap, grab a 5.3 and put her in there. They are cheap, and as long as you don't go stupid with the cubes and the cam, your fuel economy will be great. They are very efficient engines.

LS4s do not come with LS6 intakes. They have their own intake and they are horrible. They do come with the 243 heads though. Those motors are really good for torque. I just got rid of a 2007 Monte Carlo SS and it would spin the tires forever.
