I'm hunting alternates to my current 2 1/2" Hooker Aero catback setup on the Cady. It's worked great, but after 14 years it's finally coming apart with repeat cases of rust-thru along the pipe seams.
I'm just fixated on trying something new, and my first thought was a nice DynaMax Ultra Flo system. Summit/Jegs shows no app. The company says BACKORDERED - No plan restart - for awhile it seems.
Next. For Flowmaster The good news: there appear to be some new model mufflers compared to the numbers I've heard over the years (i.e. 70 Series BigBlock):
I've had the Flowmaster American Thunder system in my Caprice for over 10 years. Had it with the old L99 and now with the LT1. This system does not use resonators and instead has chrome tail pipes.
The system fit well on the caprice, not sure how it may fit on a Caddy. The downside (to me) is 2.25" pipe and a H pipe instead of X pipe. The positive...this system just won't rot away. Waiting for it to happen so I can go with a Franken-system with 2.5", X pipe and finally be able to install my DM triangulation bars. This system just won't rot away and justify replacement which I guess is a plus, and was easy to install myself.
Limping along using band clamps and copper rtv at various burnthrus. I calculate replacement with expiring tags in 2 years using your approach. Considering no intermal mods most probably doing a 2 1/2" in X 2 1/4" out muffs approach this time. You know oem Cady is ~19" long muffs, probably the most quiet and restrictive things ever designed cwm4. My Aeros sound darned good, but I'd like more than 14" muffs considering all that room. I'll be checking more into those long new model Flowmaster jobbies for SUV/pickups.
I'll second Dan at Clear Image. He makes smooth, no crimp pipes specifically for the B-Body chassis. He worked with me on my wagon exhaust. The pipes aft of the axle are totally different from the sedan. Dan set me up with loose components (pipes over the axle & around the gas tank, resonators and turn downs), that my local shop was able to tweak and fit to my wagon.
Just a guess, but the extra wheelbase of the D-Body could be incorporated between the siamesed X-Junction and the mufflers.
Spintech makes long case mufflers in the Sportsman Street 3000, Sportsman Street 3000XLP line (both w/13" case) and Truck/RV 8000 (20" case).
I have a set of "Pipes" 2.5 inch brand new in the box if that interests u. Was goin to run them with a pair of dynomax mufflers, also new in box. But im goin to have to run a 3inch exhaust system with my new setup.
The dynomax stuff is what I'm planning on running. Here's the parts diagram from their website:
My only issue, which I think OP or someone else mentioned, is that I kind of want to stick with original (or close to) length mufflers, and I've always been partial to Dynomax super turbo mufflers. I've used them on a few other cars over the years, and I always like the sound, but usually the "recommended" case length is too short for my taste.
Also, these mufflers would be far cheaper (about half) than the ultra flows listed in their kit. There also may be enough extra length to make up for the difference between B and D bodies. I'll just have to see if I can find a muffler shop around here that can weld on some sort of doo-hicky that would allow the super turbos to be attached to the factory hangers.
These should be the right ones (I'd have to double check my notes), 2.5" in and out, in the correct locations (obviously one muffler would be flipped upside down) and a full 25+" case length.
But I should note that in my build, while performance is a definite must, I'm also striving for stealth so these should flow just as well as anything else you can find, but will likely be a lot quieter, especially at idle and low rpm/load. But when you get on 'em, it should be obvious that your ride isn't anything but stock. :grin2:
Gents,
For y'all running these, can you weigh in on any change over an extended period of time with these muffs that include (potentially erodible) sound deadening fiberglass in the design?

Well, if I had one question for 87 Saleen it'd have to be what on god's green earth sort of street licensable build is gonna require a 3" setup? - yikes.
For all responsers thanks. It shows if I'm gonna be happy with this rig for another 14 years there's still more homework.

When my new 396 build gets back on the road, I might move up to a 3" system. Not sure if it will be ABSOLUTELY needed, but we shall see. Right now I have the 1-3/4 Quads with the 3" collector necking down to a 2-1/2" Dynomax system.
Well, after thinking about it a bunch and after some emails, and thanks to a few people who also responded to this thread, I may have changed my mind. I've been picking Dan's brain from Clear Image and I may just go for a full setup from him. It's a chunk of change, but absolutely everything is available in stainless steel, which should last a ridiculously long time. I've only had my car a year and it still has the entire, original factory stainless steel exhaust on it, and it surprisingly looks really good considering the age and mileage.
I threw a few curve balls at Dan, but he's been really good about answering my questions and getting me straightened out. Again, it's not the cheapest option, but it should be good quality stuff. And since a few others were already having headers done, he offered me a small discount if I ordered mine. And if he can get another order for a catback, it may be possible to talk him into a small discount for the both of us on that.
There's a few options that aren't on his website, (hence all my emails and questions to him) but his entire catback is available in stainless, and you've got a variety of options that would affect the sound. If you want loud, go with either muffler choice and no resonators, if you want quiet (which I did) he's got options for extra quiet versions of the mufflers (they widen them and add extra packing) and resonators, or anywhere in between.
Hey everyone we do have many options available and I just posted a sale on our exhaust systems. We can mix and match components to design a custom system using what you like.
Good to know and good to see you still kicking on the Forum. I picked up a set of your Tri-Ys recently and will be. Contacting you at some point on some replacement Cats and possibly a cat back kit as well. Just going to take some time to gather up the funds but I'll be in touch.
Congrats on the "shout-out" in this months Super Chevy "Time for the shoehorn" article!
On the subject of cat-backs, I just installed a Summit cat-back today SUM-680028. The fit was good. Each car fits slightly differently and I did have to trim 2 1/2" from the driver's side intermediate pipe. The mufflers are quite a bit quieter than the Hooker Aero Chambers I took off.
Hi guys.Ibhave Dans Quad-1 headers with a full stainless steel exhaust on my 96 SS.I had Dan put bungs in each exhaust if I want to put AFR gauges on it or if I bring it to a dyno to get tuned they can plug right in.
I believe you get what u pay for.He was great for me as he listened to what I wanted. The Quality is amazing and fit and finish is up there too.
Paul.
Most, if not all the parts on that Dynamax chart can also be found at RockAuto. You just have to put the part numbers in to the part number search box, rather than finding them thru the 94-96 Impala SS link. Then use the RockAuto discount.
I have used all of the Walker/Dynamax parts on my exhaust with a pair of Flowmaster 50's for about 7 years now and I like the sound of my exhaust. You many need to move to a different muffler for more noise or sound. Just make sure you get the inlet and outlet set right for the pipes and in 2.5".
I know this is an old post, but this is still good info I have not seen before.
I ran them for 12 years and only issue was the rear pipe connection rusted but otherwise they were fine. I replaced them with SpinTech Sportsman XL's (chambered muffler)
I've gotten great life out of these too. Better than factory for a change.
Just checked records. The first 17749 lasted 6 years when I replaced it with another 17749.
Started getting louder but turned out to be the reused dynomax OTA pipe from 3 years prior to that was rotting out at the muffler outlet. So 9 years easy for the muffler/OTA combo. So I'd say no noticeable change in sound until the rotted pipe. But I also run the dynomax resonator to quiet it down some more. So the rotted pipe change was exaggerated.
I never did end up using those, went with a complete setup from Dan. However I'm thinking of experimenting with different combos of mufflers, resonators on or off, etc to see if I can get it perfect. I also found that dynomax makes a full stainless steel version of their super turbo mufflers, but I don't have a part number handy, just something to be aware of if you're looking for rust prevention.
I keep hearing about the "Super Chevy" article with my products. I honestly haven't seen it yet. I guess I need to pick up a copy. Thanks for letting me know.
We are also thinking about making our own mufflers. 304 stainless ovals would probably be the first. We already do our own resonators.

Another big thumbs up for Clear Image Automotive (CIA). I run full stainless long tubes and 3" all the way back on my '96 DCM with built supercharged, methanol injected LT-4 from Dan.
