CATS & California

What's the deal with CATCO cats not being legal in Cali? I was getting ready to sell my set to a guy out there and saw on Summit's website that they're not legal.
Would these not pass a visual inspection? What are people to do if they need to replace them, buy used OEM ones from a junk yard?

Anyone know?

Just a guess! They do not have a CARB Certificate number making them illegal in CA.

Buy an aftermarket one that has a CARB sticker or one from parts store that meets OEM specs...

If they’re part #’s 9403 and 9404, then they’re direct replacements for the stock cats. Don’t sweat it. No one will be able to tell the difference. They look stock, perform like stock, etc. And yes…..if you pass emissions (even in Cali) with stock cats, then you’ll pass with these. California is just 'fummy' that way.....

Thanks KW.
I don't want this guy to buy these and then they not work. He only needs the passenger side and all of the part numbers for it are on the heat shield that face the under side of the car. They would need a mirror to get up there and look but I don't see why they would because it looks identical to the stock unit from underneath the car.

CATS here in Calif. for cars 96 and newer (OBD2) "officially" need to be C.A.R.B. OBD2. This makes them $200 vs $60 for a generic CAT.

It typically does not happen on smog tests but I have had a guy confirm mine were stamped with the CARB AND the OBD2 for the visual part of the test.

With this said a CAT from a 94-96 LT1 B body dual exhaust will work and appear "stock"

This carb obd2 crap is about how the CAT is labled, not what the tail pipe says.

I have MagnaFlo OBD2 C.A.R.B. CATS I had welded in. They are stamped.

CARB Version 2 ?

You can tell how long it's been since I lived shortly in CA...

Is there a diference in a cat and a CARB OBD2 cat? Other than the sticker/stamp?
