EGR valve

I'm getting an engine code for "EGR flow malfunction"

I finally found what I think is the EGR valve and solenoid. (Rear top driver's side of engine?)

How the hell do I get to it and which should I start with?
Solenoid is $28
Valve is $55

I can't find any reference to it in the service manual other than "remove"!

What size bolts, or are they screws. Do I need to worry about them breaking off,

Any pictures or description would be helpful.

Or, should I just keep clearing the code and ignore it.

I'm not getting the mileage I had hoped on the wagon, but it does have the towing package, so I figure that drops it from the top line of 27-28mpg to probably 24-25?

I get 22-23 on the highway and 17-18 around town.

I have the towing package caddy and yes youre getting good mileage!

I think the EGR was held on with 10mm nuts. Just a open end wrench was needed to get it off. You can test the valve by pushing in on the valve inside with a finger or 2 and then putting a finger over the vacuum port and let go of the valve and it should stay pushed in, then take your finger off the vacuum port and it will come back out. Then its good. But EGR valves get gunky so I like to take them off, spray them out thoroughly with carb cleaner working the valve in and out and using a rag with some spray on it and wipe inside the intake best you can. Buy a new gasket and put it back on.

So if the valve is then good then you either have a vacuum leak to the EGR which is very possible or that solenoid is bad, which doesnt happen much.

Thanks....I'll see if I can get it off tomorrow and clean it out. Hopefully, I won't need a new one.


And I thought getting to the distributor on my nailheads was difficult!

DONE!

Old Valve was definitely toast....all squishy and wouldn't hold any vacuum.

New one is nice and tight.

Easier than I thought to get on and off, just had to lay across the top of the engine and go at it with both hands.
