Starting issue(starter buzzes, engine doesn't crank)

I've tried jumping the car, removing and testing the starter, and no such luck yet. The issue is the starter buzzes, but no cranking. I can hear the starter gears spinning as long as the key is turned over, but it does not crank at all.

how did you "test" the starter?

does the starter drive gear move out when when 12v is applied to starter?

you mention you hear starter motor turning but engine is not...suggests starter solenoid is not activating

Year backs, my '77 Bonneville had this problem.

For me, it was a matter of the starter being good, but the teeth on the flex plate were all jacked-up. There was nothing for the starter to to catch.

Anyway, the dealer put a new plate on the car and I got something like another 140K, trouble free miles out of the car.....

Both BallSS and KW touched on the 2 possibilities I was thinking of. Either the starter gear is not engaging with the flywheel or the teeth on the flywheel are boogered up. HOPE THAT ITS THE STARTER!!

What I would do is get the car off the ground so you can remove the Trans inspection cover (4 bolts) to see the area where the starter engages the flywheel. If you don't have a remote starter switch, have someone in the car crank it while you watch from underneath to see what's going on. It should be pretty obvious once you see it.

I agree with everyone else but must add since I just had this same problem so I would recommend if it is the starter to go with the corvette starter. I think I paid 130 at az for the starter with lifetime guarantee. No problems since then and it sounds better starting up

Solenoid and starter functioned just fine on the machine at AutoZone. Sent and received signal, the gear slid away to the end of the driveshaft inside the starter case. All worked fine. Gave a 100% great bill of health on the test receipt.

I acknowledge all of your posts. A like button would help. 😂

I'll take the trans plate off and inspect it. I'm familiar with its location and saw the bolts yesterday when under the car.

100% - If you did have to replace the starter, I would recommend the Vette Starter as well and believe they are a little less money too.

I take it you just pulled the starter before checking the Starter to FlexPlate contact area? At least you know the starter (out of the car) is working fine. Keep in mind though that you could have fixed the problem just by removing the starter assuming something with the wiring (internal/external) got shaken during the removal process and made a connection again. Don't be surprised if it works fine once you reinstall the starter. If that's the case, replace the starter or have it show up again at a later time.

Pull the cover (IIRC - 4 - 13mm bolts) and get the Starter back in and check the alignment of the Starter Gear to the Flywheel. Most cases you can just bolt it in and go or need to add/remove shims as needed. Most Starters I've installed required No Shims.

I REALLY hope the problem is not with the flywheel/teeth. If it is, that means the Trans and Engine will need to be separated to replace the Flywheel. Not difficult if you can do it but could be a sizable Labor charge if you job this out. If you do need one, I have a extra I could sell you from a spare LT engine.

I sure hope it's not the FW you're dealing with.

The display is different for me, so none of the vBulletin tools show up. Just a reply button. 😩
