Thought I had lost the original motor

after 23 years and 285K+ miles, the 94SS was having starting problems. Thought it might have been the starter, as it had been acting up for a week or two when starting, but then one day it would not start. After almost starting multiple times, I could smell gas while trying to start it and on the dipstick. While loading the car on a flatbed, with the front higher than the back, I noticed that I had fuel coming out the drivers side muffler! So I knew it wasn't the starter, but something with the fuel system or worse. Had one shop take a look at it, and they pronounced it had lost the motor and that it had coolant in the oil (which it did not) and was time for a new engine. Towed it back home and then after another flatbed trip to my shop of first choice, they diagnosed it with one injector staying open just filling the cylinder with fuel. Went ahead and had all 8 injectors replaced along with the fuel pressure regulator, put new plugs in, oil change and filter, and the old SS runs better than before. I have never had to even take off a valve cover on the engine in 23 years, as the motor itself has been untouched the entire time! Not bad getting almost 300k on the original injectors.

I had the same injector problem last year.
Hard starting late in the fall with a smell of gas, then starter lockup for the first spring start.
I replaced the injectors and the car ran for the year.
This spring starter lockup on the first start then it cranked slow. Changed to a vet starter. I did not realize how slow my old starter had been.

no, I checked the oil myself and could only smell gas on the dipstick. The shop owner that had his mechanic look at it, was not happy with his employee after I told him the motor was fine and had been running better than ever after the injectors were replaced. I talked to the mechanic myself and he was surprised that the engine was fine, as he really thought he saw coolant blow out one of the plug holes when he was looking at it. I told him everyone makes mistakes and the car was fine. The shop is really more of a light repair and alignment and suspension shop anyway.

If you smell gas in the oil it is worth the time to pull the injectors (leave on the fuel rails) and do a fuel pump on test. When you are planning to replace eight injectors you want to be sure.

Is there any other way for fuel to get into the crankcase other than some sort of injector problem?
