OBD1 scanning and tuning. Scan9495 on a RM

So today was the final straw. I am done trying to guess what the hell is wrong with this car. I havent finished replacing all the parts I wanted to yet, but nonetheless I have very low expectations that the issues will be solved in their entirety.

So first, I am going to get a an ALDL cable from ALDLcable.com and then use scan9495 to get me started. Maybe EEHack if I can get it work. Apparently B-bodies and more specifically, roadmasters, have communication issues. I want to work with steve to get these things to connect properly, but Ill see if that comes to fruition...

The point of this thread will be to make it very easy and straight forward for us RM owners, and anyone else who wants to scan, to get the tools necessary to get a scan going and how to properly set it up. I know there are videos and tutorials out there, but for the non-tech person, this can be a daunting challenge with as much reading and instructions as there are.

So while I wait for my cable to show up, I will take any advice on how to get started, being that this will be my first time datalogging an OBD1 car and whatnot.

It is supposed to be straight forward but I read a lot of people having connectivity issues or other problems similar to that, so if you know of any with the roadmaster, let me know. I do know the Airbag(sir) and ABS will not work from scan9495 in a b body. But I have climate control and I have no codes in either of those departments.

Also looking to get tunercats once I get the random misfire solved. Being able to do my own tuning should help yield good results. From changing the fan on temps to locking the TC in third etc..., I hope to squeeze a bit more MPG from this old tuna boat.
NADACOP likes this.

94 RMSB 170K Sat 5 years, ran for 1 of those then remained untouched for 4. Sat because it was slapped by a deer and the owners didnt want to fix it for whatever reason.
Mods, all the free good ones.
Future? Probably pull engine, reseal it, and run it a lot more. Looking to get 250k out of it. PRAYING for 300k.

Although my software is old there are updates for some of it...

The ALDL cable actually is easy to build yourself if you want to try...
A program called FreeScan is available that used to work. But last time I used it I was using Windows 98 so I am unsure if it is compatible with newer systems.

I may actually be revisiting this myself in the next few years to try and communicate with it to build some of my own software. I will be working shortly with ODBII stuff to start working on some tools to allow scanning and such and I hope to bring that same system to the older ODBI setup in our cars and others. My car is in storage waiting for time and money which won't happen until I retire in 5 years. But LT1 Edit also still exists and they have a scanner as well.

Since the ODBI system is used to diagnose everything I suspect unless there is a different programmer port on the anti lock brakes system that it IS available. Just have to find it.

communications issues I had with mine were related to the software being compatible with the ALDL cable which is a serial cable. Not all USB-Serial cables work well with the software...

Well I went ahead and ordered the aldl cable and downloaded scan9495. Don't know if I want to go down the path for eehack. Trying to get a hold of Steve seems difficult.. haven't been able to contact him. I have one more Avenue I think that will get me to him though.

Either way. I was going through scan 9495 last night and it seems very straight forward. It's just a scanning logging software, so it's very simple which is great. I just need to be able to see what is causing my car to act stupid. Sadly I can't do a cylinder contribution test in scan 9495.

Once I finally start scanning, I'll post up pics and maybe video of what has to be done to get it work correctly. Apparently there are few issues with b bodies. I will find out Saturday when I get my aldl cable.

Either way, I think it's going to be fun just looking at what this thing is doing while I drive.

I use EEhack for data logging. I have no connection issues.

It says b bodies are not fully supported but works just fine.

After posting to the EEHACK forum, Steve replied stating that, data logging and all that will work fine for the B bodies but the tuning software won't work on the b bodies more than likely. He went on to say that the b body dash cluster and accessories get in the way of the program writing to the PCM, so actually flashing might work, but fuses will need to be pulled and at that point there still is no guarantee it will work.

SO, what that means to say is that currently EEHACK isn't really going to work for our cars for tuning. BUT, he said I should contact him about any issues I have with trying to get the software to work with the b body. So maybe I will get EEHACK to work with b bodies after some time. I will update this thread as I go along with this, and we will see where it goes!

I suspect if you remove the PCM from the car and communicate with it directly EEHACk would work...

Although programs like LT1 Edit and tunercat communicate just fine with it in the vehicle.

Is LT1 Edit free? The appeal to eehack is the price.

My original idea was to just get tunercat. But I want to see if I can get eehack to work. If Steve isn't up to the task of adjusting the program to work, I'll just buy tunercat. Steve has done enough for us really, but I would like to see if he can get this setup for us B bodies.

Guess I'm just lucky, works fine w/ mine.
I've probably reflashed @ least a dozen times.

You could always just unplug pcm and use a bench harness to reflash. But sounds like making a cable is out of your comfort zone.

I could make a cable.. that's not a problem. I'm a master solderer, so I am always joining wires together.

How would I need to go about making a cable if I need to? Presumptively go to a junkyard and get the connectors off an ECM there then make a cable that goes to USB from that connector?

Apparently the road master has issues because of the added idiot lights and BS features that don't actually work worth a damn. Steve did mention pulling a couple fuses, but like I said, I haven't gotten my cable yet, so I am just waiting.

The reason I bought an ALDL cable was because I read a lot of issues using those converter things you buy off ebay and then connect a USB pigtail to. Plus having the cable makes me look like I know what I am doing. Yeah, I'll go with that.... lol
