Going from floor shift back to column shift. Crazy?

I've been tossing the idea around lately.

My 95 has a floor shifter, but not the standard 96 shifter. The previous owner had someone install a megashifter.

It doesn't look too bad...but I'm really not interested in drag racing this car. It's a cruiser...and no cup holders is annoying. Plus as you can see it kinda gets in the way.

From what I could see poking around under the dash for other things, they seem to have removed ALL the hardware related to the column shift, including cutting off the nub for where the shifter should go. I don't know what linkage they used, but as far as I know the megashifter comes with it's own cable so it's either a linkage that came with it or something custom..which would explain the removal of all the other stuff. And lastly the console...they didn't get a 96, instead they just cut out the cupholder area of the 95.

Just trying to make a list of stuff I'd need to estimate price...so far I've got:

Steering column
Interior shift linkage
shift cable
transmission linkage
and a new console...

looks like the console would be the most expensive part, but maybe i'll get lucky on that since everyone seems to want the floor shift anyway. Anything else?

Or,convert to a factory style floor shift. No,I don't believe anyone has/would go back to a column shift. I would just find a shifter that appealed to me more.

Crazy? Yep

Only thing worse than a column shift is letting people drink anything while sitting on Leather seats. Floor shift does not a race car make.

Nothing with a v8.

I think the Megashifter is better suited for third Gen F-bodies.

Now......if you must dump it (cuz you hate it).

Sell it to BOWTIEHEAVEN and then.......

Go get one of these and put it in the Impala.

Thats a great looking pooch man, looks like he is really cool to roll with in Springtime, just watch the leather.

I dunno...I feel like the parts for the 96 are harder to come by, they're more expensive, and in the end it'll require more work since the interior has to come out so the plate can be welded in, linkage has to be fabbed, etc.

With the column I can pretty much use any junkyard piece.

Never gonna happen. If this thing does turn in to a drag racer, that will be way in the future. For now and for the foreseeable future, this is a car for me to cruise in and enjoy. I already have the GTO for driving unreasonably fast. That's why it doesn't really matter for me about having the floor shifter. It really adds nothing to the car for the way I'll be driving it.

And thanks (she) is great. So far she's good in the car, mostly sits or lays down. Just gotta keep the nails short, but I might buy a cover for her seat anyway.

Oh, and nobody is allowed to eat/drink in my car(s)...except for me!

I ran the Megashifter in my 81 Z28 (2nd Gen) for years and loved it. They made one that was a direct fit for the 73-81 Camaro consoles.

OP - You should be able to pull the pieces together to go back to column shift pretty easy. I wouldn't do it since I did the reverse in my 95 and like a floor shift. Not really a performance mod as much as a look and feel more suited to a performance car. IMHO

'95 Caprice SS conversion - Bonny Buckets - 96 Column, Shifter and Console - 3.73 Gear and Herter tune - Z/28 Cluster - Blazer OH Console - Green/Pink bushings - Chromed Impala Wheels - Eibach Springs and Bilstein Shocks - Corvette Engine Dress - the list goes on and still more to do...it never ends.

Nothing has to be welded.

No linkage fabbing required, parts from a 4thgen F Body work just fine.

The end result is worth the time, IMO.

I agree though that parts are hard to come by and can be expensive. I just got lucky and grabbed a setup from a forum member for cheap.

Nothing with a v8.

I thought you had to combine the 95 and 96 linkage? I guess that's only if you want the dash gear indicator to work now that I think about it.
