This is so embarrassing... I was driving my 1995 Fleetwood down a hill at around 40 MPH. I wanted to put it in N and instead put it in R... Almost instantly put it back in N, then in D. I realized the engine has stalled only when I lost power steering. Stopped the vehicle and tried to start it to no avail. I made probably 100-200 yards before I stopped. In about 15 minutes tried again and after several attempts it finally started and drove as if nothing happened. There is a little noise when I shift through R -N- D or D-N-R (brakes applied). Made about 20 miles after the incident without any problems. The ATF is clear and nice.
Do you think I have just killed my transmission? Anybody with similar experience?
I did that once in a Ford Aerostar. Engine cut off when I threw it in reverse going forward.
It started right back up and didnt have any problems afterwards.
Your trans is most likely OK if you can still drive the car

Nope ... you didn't do anything except make some noise and scare yourself good. There is a "paw" in the transmission that has to drop into a "slot" on the output gear when you put the transmission in reverse. Once in the slot, it locks the transmission up (and your rear tires). You can't "jamb" the "paw" into the "slot," it has to "fall" in (spring loaded). At any speed above a super crawl, it will simply skip across the slots on the output gear. Sounds nasty, but does very little.
Thank you for the answer. Automatic transmissions are a major weak spot for me. I could not see a way for the PCM to prevent a reverse shift.
I never thought GM would protect the manual.
