Tips on taking a great photos (some of you really need to read this!)

I have a few basic tips, and then I'll leave the rest to the pros:

1. Get the whole damn car in the shot!
FAIL!

Win!

2. keep the sun behind you (unless you've got a really bright flash)
3. Try to take photo's in early morning or late evening for best light.
4. Find a nice, uncluttered area for background.

Here's an excellent guide to auto photog:

here's a good example of a good pic taken by me with nothing more than my phone:

The whole car is in the shot, the lighting was great at 6pm, the vehicle was parked in the shade and the sun was behind me. The background wasn't the best, but hey, its a car show, whatta do?

If you found him that ugly, you could have asked him to move, he looks like a pleasant enough older fella to me.

Good basic tips. I have noticed some pictures look like the camera lens had been recently licked. Please ensure all fluids are cleaned from the lens prior to taking the photo.

Seriously.

There are some beautiful cars being submitted but most background and picture taking skills suck big time.

How hard is it to find a pleasant or unique place to use as a background? Taking a picture in a parking lot, in the street in front of the house or in the driveway ain't gonna win you ROTM unless the car can overcome the distractions.

Take the position of the sun or nearby lighting into account when positioning the car.

Think about the angles you are using when positioning yourself and the camera you are using. You don't want to be so wide angle that the background content distracts. Keep in mind that the car is the subject and should occupy at least 65-80% of the frame.

Put a little thought into it if you want to seriously compete!!!

Hey Clownmaster! I'm willing to donate this pic to you for use as your avatar:

Good lighting, full shot of the car, car occupies most of the shot, un-cluttered background... it's all there!
