Heads and cam are different.

The Corvette has a higher static compression ratio, a higher dynamic compression ratio and less optimal quench than the stock Impala engine. As a result, it requires fuel with a higher octane rating.

BTW.....just because they call it "premium", does not mean it's a 'better' fuel.

76 or Chevron most of the time. I split the difference & run their 89 octane. I get a little "ping" with the 87, so that smooths her out. If my choices are limited (or cash is), I have been picking up bottles of octane boost at my local dollar store. That way I can run a cheaper brand & octane (usually Arco) & bump up octane at the same time. Plus, it has injector cleaner in it so an added benefit!! Car now has 134,000 on it.

96 Caprice Wagon: LT1, Black exterior with ruby red inside, Soundstream sound, rollpan, Corvette dress, LT4 valve covers, Edelbrock headers, SRI cai, Spintech 6334 muffs, Dynomax stainless tips that exit behind wheels, H-Pipe, built tranny with Corvette servos, Hipro valve body & stall convertor, 9C1 rear disc w/ SS backing plates, Wildwood 1.5" rotors w/ 4 piston calipers in front, swaybars front & rear, Metco rear links, 20" Centerline Lancers with Sumitumo 255-35-20 shoes. 1 of 485 built!!

A lot of factors affect octane need, often forgotten are altitude and temperature.
I have tune that calls for premium gas.
I run regular 87. Am I tempting the gods?
I don't think so. I live at 4700' it is 12 degrees now. Still, I run rug in the summer. I hooked up my scanner, floored it a few times, drove around drivin g it easy, driving it hard and saw no knock retard, engine sounded fine to me.

'96 Impala bought new, with every bolt on imagineable
'06 GTO, headers, dyno tune, almost every stock suspension piece replaced with stuff that isn't crap!
'03 Jetta Wagon TDI, large injectors, euro tune, vr6 clutch, it is fast and gets over 45mpg

I agree. I have a 93 Octane tune and run 93 when I am in FL. Here in CA 91 is premium and I run it once in a while. Most of the time it gets ARCO 89 and every once in a while Chevron or Shell for injector health. I haven't had any problems running 89 but I also am at 3000ft elevation when in CA.

I use regular in my 91 Caprice.

When I was a kid (compared to an old retired guy) the choices were Regular or HiTest.
