Progressive snapshot

Ok well we have all seen the commercials. Supposedly it tracks how often you drive, what time you drive and when brakes are applied hard. Well they lied to you. They said it has no GPS capabilities, it does... The patent they have even says it. If it has GPS in it, then it can track speed, and there is software with all the speed limits on it. So they could charge you for that. Now it is optional and can save you money... However are they going to make it necessary to get insurance? This could be bad!

95 impala SS- Flowmaster exhaust, k&n intake, Hypertek chip, stock transmission in need of a rebuild, few other things here and there.

The first one of those developed by Progressive was called Autograph and they ran a pilot program in Texas years ago with it, it had GPS capabilities and used them.
Progressive sold the technology to the U.S. government.
My wife has been working at progressive for 35 years and I knew about this stuff last century.
The event data recorders that all vehicles will have to have soon will most likely have government mandated and monitored GPS capabilities eventually so big brother will be riding shotgun in every vehicle anyway.

I'm sure as vehicles get more fuel efficient and the government starts to lose more and more money on the gas tax, they will force us to pay tax on actual miles driven. Which would mean forcing GPS tracking on all vehicles.

Progressive is not a good insurance company and should be avoided. The "snapshot" scam is just another example of their mentality.

If they do they may find themselves out of business. However, I think it comes down to driving style, if you obey the laws and never drive fast, why not take them up on their offer to save money? If it constantly monitors your driving habits I would be in trouble. While the cost of speeding tickets and kids have caused me to slow down dramitically, I do still drive aggresively from time to time

I think these only work on ODB2 cars. So if you have 95 or older, no need to worry bout Big Brother. At least not for now....
