: Swapable parts from a 94 caprice to 96 impala
proplayer44 08-20-2009, 08:21 PM I have a 96 Impala.
I can buy a 94 Caprice with the LT1 for like 950 bucks canadian. The car is currently running and the owner claims the parking brake is the only problem. It has 250000 kilometers on it. I haven't seen it yet. How much different are these two cars if I wanted to use the caprice as a parts car for my Impala. Say if my brakes need replacing. Or the fuel pump goes? Or the water pump, Opti spark, fans, radiator, belts, transmission, motor, whatever.
How much of this stuff is swapable?
Thanks
Martin
I just want it because I love these cars!!!
no I'm not providing the link to the sale, LOL.
HuSSker 08-20-2009, 08:37 PM Differencees include:
Front doors and mirrors
PCM
Transmission valve body
Timing cover
Rear quarter glass
Seatbelt buckles (male part)
Radiator/coolant tank
Dipstick & tube
ABS modulator
I'd buy it, no doubt about it.
proplayer44 08-20-2009, 10:56 PM I remember reading a while back that for example the power steering box is slightly different between the two of them. Different model numbers and there may be issues with using a 94 caprice one in a 96 Impala. The 94 has 2 o2 sensors while the 96 has 4. Stuff like that that could impact the swapping of specific parts.
The 94 has a digital cluster too and no floor shifter. Does that mean the transmission is still easily swapable?
305classic 08-21-2009, 11:12 AM rear end is different along wih the rear brakes.
proplayer44 08-21-2009, 04:21 PM I should have added it has the police package with 4 wheel disc brakes. Does the police package have a different rear end?

Yes, the police one is narrower. Steering box is the same though.
proplayer44 09-07-2009, 08:14 AM I'm still thinking of getting an old Caprice for parts. There is an old one from an estate sale and the person selling the car says it has the "cop engine" and I asked if it was the 5.7 then and she wasn't sure. Just that it was the cop engine. She knows almost nothing else about the car. I'm wondering if it actually has the 5.0 and not the 5.7. I've never seen the 5.0 engine. When I walk up to it will I be able to immediately tell the difference between the two?
Does anyone have a pictures of both?
fbi9c1 09-07-2009, 12:03 PM You need to do some readling. There aren't any "5.0"'s in these cars. It's either the 4.3 or 5.7. 5.7 has LT1 SPID code in the trunk, 4.3 has L99. VIN letter P is 5.7 is another way to tell. 5.7 9c1's have 2 external coolers in front of the radiator and true dual exhausts. 4.3 9c1's have one cooler and single exhaust.
proplayer44 09-07-2009, 12:26 PM Ok, thanks. Ya there is not much to search in this forum anymore but I just googled and apparently they externally look identical. I've seen a couple caprices with the P in the Vin so assumed they all had them. I know the Impala has the WX3 in the trunk. Is it the same for the Caprice? Thanks for the tip about the exhaust and the cooler, I'll check that.

No - not the same. WX3 is the Impala option on a Caprice. But, as mentioned - for that price - buy it.
proplayer44 09-07-2009, 03:31 PM That one is gone (original reason for posting). But I've been looking around
I gave them a call and found out more. It is the 4.3 because it only has single exhaust. It has over 300000 kilometers on it but I've got them down to $300. So I figure it might still have stuff on it.
Steering box still the same on the 4.3? The tires are good they said and it had the brakes done recently. Of course it isn't 4 wheel disc but meh. It's a white 1996 duel fuel. Is the opti the same in these?

Don't judge by the single exhaust alone - there have been cheapskates who converted. You have to see the VIN to be sure.
305classic 09-10-2009, 10:00 PM if you want the car than get it (any car under $500 that runs and drives is worth it for the most part), but i wouldn't waste my time using brakes belts tires and stuff like that from a car with neer 200,000 miles on it.
