That pad catches moisture droplets and channels them down onto the drip tray so that stuff doesn't go through your HVAC ductwork. Otherwise you'll be having random water drops leaking from all over your dash. BTW, that's just some sort of generic open-cell foam. You could get that at any number of places (none of which are coming to mind at the moment). But see if you can clean and salvage the one off of your old core.
