: Brink of overheating..

I was driving down the road in stop and go traffic (about 85-90* outside). And the temp gauge read the following

What could be causing the temp raise. Never did it before. I did unplug the waterpump sensor and the fan did come on almost right away. I kept driving and it opened up and the temp went back to normal. What could that have been?

Traffic will do that, I had my old wagon up to 3/4 on City Line Ave around 6PM (you have to know how bad traffic that is if you're around Philly) and I had tuned the fans to go on early. If it doesn't do that in normal driving I wouldn't worry about it.

Maybe try cracking the bleeder valve or overflow cap the next few times you get it up to temp, might have some air in the system.

Make sure your fans are both working and that you don't have any air trapped in the cooling system, or a cooling system leak (check cap). On a hot day, that reading could occur with stock fan turn-on temps. They are hot, 225F primary, 232F secondary.

When the A/C compressor is running, the primary cooling fan will in almost every case be on as well. Otherwise, it does not come on until an engine temp of 225F.

Thats a normal reading when setting or driving in heavy traffic. Mine gets there all the time during the summer here.

So that temp is nothing to worry about?

also any tricks on changing the A/C compressor anyone i will be doing my ac this weekend.

Get the PCM flashed so the fans come on earlier.

My 95 Impala NEVER got that warm even with the stock PCM flash.. I can idle it for 10 mins in 100* florida heat and it still wont even go 1/2 temp on the factory? "Gauge":p

If it gets that warm with a stock tune, You have a clogged up radiator/ cooling system.

Search on here. It's been discussed many times over.

My system gets there all the time, especially when the temp is 110 degrees here in california, and I have a brand new radiator and water pump.

then, like everyone else.. I can turn on the ac and it drops down to here:

and usually it stays there, untill like i said earlier, I hit traffic or idle for LONG periods of time. I can idle for an hour too, and it wont reach the temp for the fans to turn on. its only in stop and go traffic.

edit: i too was worried about that high temp, so i bought a data cable and downloaded freescan, and it confirms that when the needle strikes that position and the fans turn on it was around 220.. so i no longer worry about it

Should have asked if you have a stock tune. Hit me up, I can tune for your fans to go on early. My SS sits just above C no matter what with a 160tstat and tune.

So normal then. I bled the shiat out of it and it never helped. Only does it when slow or stopped so I turn the dial to defrost or a/c and it stays under half. My dads 160* Herter tuned 96 BBB always read 160 :)

Not possible unless stat is stuck open. I 160 stat starts to open at 160 and isn't fully open until around 175. Cars set up for this run 175-185. Are you basing your statement on where you think 160 is on the gauge or on actual readings with a cable?

Let me try again, the idiot gauge on the dash always read 160 ISH and never moved. Sorry for my mis-information. The t-stat was not stuck open. My statement was merely from memory of driving the car then technical deduction.

My concern was with my 95 and the gauge that almost goes into the red unless I select defrost or a/c on the hvac control switch. My baseline (the 96 bbb) led me to believe the 95 had a problem, but then the herd cleared it up for me. And of course people in this thread, Thank you very much.

ok so today i drove the car about a mile. outside temp around 85-90. while checking my ac unit, i noticed my temp gauge almost in the red. i opened the hood to check the fan. and noticed that my coolant tank was boiling. it was noticeable from 3-5 feet away.

any recommendations?

It's probably your overflow cap then. If it's not pressurized right it's gonna boil like that. Get a new cap.
