Hello! First of all I'd like to apologise because I suspect that this topic has been up before. The thing is I recently imported a 96 Impala and I absolutely love the car but I'm not very familiar with it yet.
When you register a new vehicle in my country you need to have the VIN number clinched or stamped into the frame (or body?) of the vehicle. I have not been able to find this yet, and nor was the personell at the vehicle inspection facility. Except for the VIN in the lower left corner of the windshield of course. I have searched google and forums of where to find this but I'm probably using the wrong keywords and all variations seems like a djungle to me. Is there a VIN on the actual frame / body on the 1996 impala SS and where can I find it? I would be very grateful for some help on this. |

In silly germany we have the same crap. I would go to another inspection facility. There´s no VIN besides the one in the windshield.
You could have a shop stamp the VIN somewhere on the frame to make the inspection guy happy, but this makes no sense because like every other part, the frames are interchangeable on these cars. EDIT: Check your driver door for a sticker: Maybe you can find the VIN there, too. Again, i would go to a better inspection facility.

there should be the SPID decal on the inside of trunk lid with VIN and option codes.
I do believe the engine computer will also have a VIN decal, under the air filter box.

Most places in Europe are like this, the VIN has to be stamped on the frame somewhere in case of a body-on-frame car like this. If it was imported legally it should be stamped on the frame rail somewhere (usually on the right hand side). Usually it's either in the wheel well or on the top of the rail in the engine compartment.
There is a partial VIN on the engine block (behind left head on deck) and on the trans (just above the pan), if they match you may be able to use these to "prove" the car's identity and get the VIN stamped again. Or ask around on a local forum for US cars, I'm sure someone has a stamp kit...

Thanks alot guys! Seems like I'll get to stamp the VIN onto the frame myself.
Feels alot better having some real information on this and not only speculation. I wouldn't want to actually stamp the VIN on and then find the original somewhere else one the body.
