Default Car will not shift out of park ?

My 96 Caprice is stuck in park. I can barely move the shifter. Where do I start? I'm pretty baffled and hoping has something to do with it being 11 degrees out last night. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like water has gotten into the cable and frozen. Don't force it and break that cable: you can't buy them.

This was it. I wasn't sure about the brake lights until I went back to check it out with my wife this morning. I wiggled the stop light switch and was able to shift again and get the car home. My brake lights are still intermittent, so I guess I have to check the switch again. Thanks everyone for the help.

Seems to be a decently common issue on the B-body line. The brake light switch fails. But typically, it will fail so the brakes are always on. I would just replace the switch. It was about $15 last time I replaced one. One of my cars has a hidden switch, that makes is so the shift lever can't be moved even when you press on the brakes. My dad sat there for a few minutes when I armed it, and forgot to tell him about it. "WTF is wrong with your car, Cory!!"

It's like $9 or was from RMS. get one, and you'll be happy. Mine used to be messed up where it would let you move it in and out of park with no brake.

Thanks everyone. If it's that cheap, I'll just get a new one and stop messing with the old one.
