From the side and back it looks like the Sonata and since Hyundai led the charge to put only four cylinders on the Sonata, everybody followed and the Impala is no exception. GM sold a lot of Impalas most to rental fleets so they do not care about making a performance version of the car and then you have NASCAR so it has the aerodynamics neede for racing the circuit, we could get what we want if we all write to GM, maybe they will listen.

It's an improvement over the previous Wimpala, but I'm not in love with it. It just proves good design isn't easy and great design is very difficult. In all honesty I'm not a fan of the chunky look of most new cars. It might fit the current taste of the masses, but it looks too much like a Camry or Hyundai to me. I know people will say it's safety standards and aerodynamics that dictate the high belt-lines, small windows and rounded chunky look, but you just have to look at high end cars from Bentley and Maserati to see good looking designs with a lot of presence and character can still be achieved. When I bought my Impala SS it was because it was positioned as a performance orientated sedan with more aggressive styling cues. Not another mundane, lost in the crowd family cruiser. So I guess I'm probably not the target demographic for this new Impala anyway. It will be interesting to see if a version is released in SS trim with a bigger engine and AWD or even (dare I say it) RWD. But I wish the Chevrolet designers would break away from the "Camry esque" styling. It's interesting, brands like Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Bugatti and Maserati can create contemporary designs that are modern and still look very European, but Chevy comes up with Impalas that look more Asian than American. We already have companies in Asia producing cars like the Camry, so I really hoped to see an Impala that made a bolder statement as a purely American car with some guts.
Who knows what my next purchase will be. It might be something European or an American classic just to get something with a little more character. That said, the new Impala is better looking than I thought it would be, just not for me in its current FWD form (but we already knew that.) Last edited by 1994 SS; 04-05-2012 at 01:47 AM. It Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's see the rear looks like a Hyundai Sonata, the sides look like a Buick Lacross, and the front-end looks like a Chevy Traverse. All-in-all it looks like a bloated Malibu!! The only silver lining is that the interior is semi-decent. Other than that (IMHO) it is a 4000 pound FWD land-barge POS that will sticker at $40K, powered by a 4 cly standard -- which should make the community organizer and current administration happy. Yey!!!!!

Why arenīt they using the Cadillac CTS platform and giving us an affordable RWD performance sedan that deserves the Impala name?

Here's the initial "official" response to those asking why AWD isn't going to be offered on the 2014 Impala--but is offered (already) on Buick Lacrosse and will be offered on Cad XTS.
Just a guess--it has as much to do with production facility capacity, and cost of re-configuring existing production lines to build the RWD vehicle in larger numbers that would occur with an Impala vs CTS. Not sure what the EPA classification of Impala vs CTS may be--based on interior volume. The CTS has a longer wheelbase, so it's a fair question. The actual build cost of CTS may be greater, and I suspect CTS fuel economy may be a few clicks lower than the Impala's. |

Retro? Different platform? More drivetrains? Different styling? Would you all buy one then?
99% of the critics in this thread either won't buy or can't afford a new Impala anyway. GM tries to build what the paying customers want, not what a bunch of tire kicking stuck in the 90's cheap bastards on a 16+ year old car forum claim they should do. |
