Default 2000 RPM stall TC

Stock 9C1 LT1
Real world driving…

Just wanted to let folks know that us with 12” are just fine. I opted to install a 12” 2000RPM stall in front of my modified rebuild and couldn’t be happier. A full throttle launch results in lots of wheel spin which didn’t happen with the stocker (1800 RPM I think) and it tows perfect. I really didn’t think that an extra 200 rpm stall would make that much difference. This past weekend was spent lugging a 5000# load (usual loads are much lighter), in overdrive, over hill and dale with zero problems. Stock, the LT1 is a torquey motor.

There's nothing wrong with a 12" converter if you keep the stall rpm way down like you have. The mistake some people make is expecting them to perform well at 2500 and up stall rpm's.
The stock converter in the Impala is about 1400 rpm stall, so it's no wonder you've noticed a good improvement.

if OP will be towing with the 2k stall...might want to add an external tranny cooler.

I suspect the temps were up there with the 5k lb trailer haul

He already has an external cooler, it's a 9c1.

A 12" converter is perfect for a stock or mildy modified LT1 in an Impala. We sell quite a few 2000-2500 stall 12: converters, and all the customers are really happy with them. The tendancy for most people who don't know is to follow the "bigger is better" theory. The end result is a 3600 stall 9.5" converter behind a bolt on motor that builds more heat and is less driveable than a 12" converter and doesn't make the car any quicker. Most knowledgable converter builders will tell you a heavy car likes less stall, anyway.

CAHALL- So is the S10 Convertor still the best to go with on a car with the typical bolton's, 3.73 gears and a tune? This is on my list of to-do's but not for a while.

If not the GM unit, what brand/stall would you recommend or do you use for your customers who don't usually go to the track but want some performance over stock? Thx

The s-10 converter was never intended for performance use. I use Protorque converters. Their 12" is a performance converter that is furnace brazed and uses needle bearings, instead of thrust washers. I'll be able to get more in depth and will be able to post prices in a couple weeks, after I get set up as a supporting vendor in July...
