Oh, and Heather dear, I suggest you add the other pertinent information you've already revealed here to that new thread.

Just because you don't hear the pump doesn't mean the pump is bad.
I have never heard my fuel pump run in any GM cars that I have owned unless it was on its way out. My 94 Fleetwood i cannot hear the pump. My 91 that has a different pump than stock to run 65 PSI, i cannot hear. My 1995 K2500 Suburban had 300K on original fuel pump I could not hear the pump run. If the pump is noisy than it is bad. These cars came from the factory without noisy pumps.
Stop passing on inaccurate info.

I wasn't aware I was passing on inaccurate info. You cannot hear it if your sitting in the car. If your near tank you hear something when key is turned on.

To me, the above would point to the opti. I've seen my fair share of popping and farting and it always pointed to the opti, especially on a 96.

2 points

the original pump is "quite" but i could hear mine if i listened for it.

when it died the replacement was WAY louder and can hear it no problem when i turn the key.

so i think you are both right...
