Not sure that I have ever heard of the waterpump not working. Typically they just leak when going bad. It is mechanically driven and I would think even if it was pure ice, the ice would crack before the steel splines would. I've never taken a waterpump apart to inspect the innards but I would suspect the propellers are made out of steel too.

More than likely what happened is the lines froze, so the coolant wasn't getting past the ice to actually bring new coolant into the block. You were not getting any heat of the heatercore because it is frozen too.

Hopefully adding some AF and letting the lines thaw out makes the problem go away.

Slushy? If the lines were "slushy", it sounds like you may have been very close to possibly popping the freeze plugs and maybe something worse if the block froze.

Not sure what your temps are for winter in your location, but it sounds like you are already questioning the previous owners maintenance schedule. Just for piece of mind, I would recommend you flush ALL the coolant (pull the knock sensors) from the system and flush the heater core as well.

Then top it all off with a 50/50 mix of green and Distilled water. Be sure to bleed the system afterwards and enjoy the toasy cabin that you will have along with the piece of mind that the block wont freeze. Figure 2 gallons of coolant and 2 of water for a complete flush.

PS - Good time for a new T-Stat too.

PS#2 - If the system was negleted for a while, may be a good idea to replace the restrictor valve on the heater hose and get a new plastic T fitting or consider making one out of metal.

some times the wp coupler/shaft splines are so worn out a load on them strips it.
or the press fit impeller is loose on the shaft.
you could pull the wp cover and check it.

You can pull the knock sensors, hopefully some stuff comes out. If not you might have to take a screw driver and poke around a bit. remove the T-Stat and run water through the system. Replace with 50/50 coolant mix and bleed the system of air.

Another problem I have seen a few times is the collar between pump and shaft strips out. I think I have 3 or 4 in a box I use for misc. spacers.

OP

it sounds like your coolant/water froze....

starting motor and trying to thaw it out that way may prove to cause damage as water can't circulate.

if you can hook up a hose to your hot water heater, pull T stat and knock sensors maybe you can flush it with hot water. same for radiator.

and not to be a dick...but once you bought the car it's 'maintance" became your responsibility which would include fluid levels and condition.

I was going to say this also. Who doesnt check and refill most if not all fluids after a car purchase?

Anyways, the above advice is spot on. It probably froze on you.
