It was the kit that shows up on Ebay if I recall correctly and it was installed into those Taiwanese (?) aftermarket headlamps with the smoked lens...it's very possible that the only reason the lens melted was because (a) made in Taiwan and/or (b) smoked lens.

Don't recall the name of the member though...

that was bill: toomanytoyz. Even though HIDs do run slightly cooler (in my experience 100-200 degrees) those projectors get moved very very close to the lense. Couple that with a probably thinner than most OEM lenses, and you've got cooling issues. HIDs operate around 600-750 degrees!

I picked up a set of those retro projectors a few weeks ago. Not yet installed, but been playing with them quite a bit. I didn’t get the standard 9004 bulb retro kit but rather the H4 for a few reasons I’ll bring up later. As far as the light output and pattern from just hooking up one of them… WOW. But this is with a 4300K bulb for maximum light. I used an alarm battery and walked around the yard and street. One is much brighter then two of those clear streetlights with 80/100 bulbs. I believe that the lens design on these projectors is more to the euro e-code standard then DOT. E-code lights throw down almost all the light to the ground vs DOT that wastes too much in upward glare for sigh illumination. I’ve yet to see a car with factory projector HIDS that light up the road as well as this single one does. But really can’t say for sure until they are in the car.

On a side note, those clear streetlights (got them for 79 when first hit ebay) are much better then the stockers. Even though the pattern is a little blotchy, they have a nice wide pattern unlike the stock that throws one heavy narrow beam down the center and little to the sides. The key with them is getting them adjusted right. You want to adjust vertical just enough to make sure they are just a little below a level beam. Too low and it feels like a fog light and hard to see distance if you drive through a very dark area suddenly. At twice the price, still wouldn’t buy a stock replacement if these are still available. Plus really grown to like the clear lens look.

Back to the projectors, the reasons for an H4:
  • If it doesn’t work out, could use them on my mustang that has H4 bulb hella replacements.
  • The H4 version uses a regular sized DS2 bulb, so you can pick up a replacement easier. Just need the right cable adapter to go to a stock DS2 bulb.
  • A stock DS2 is almost dimensionally the same as an H7 bulb in size and filament location. Minor trimming of the bulb with tin snips about under a 1/16 in. Good back up if bulb goes out in no where. Just need an extra connector to mate. Light is pretty darn good with the H7 halogen. Walking around with the one, it really lights up the road nice. Beautiful pattern. Heck, if they don’t melt the plastic, these make a great upgrade if you want to stick to halogen and you get hi/lo beams to boot.
  • Last reason for the H4 version, the factory holes extend beyond the reflector by about 3/8 inch. This puts the 9004 version that much closer to the lens. Once you open up the hole to fit the H4 version, the process removes that protrusion so the light sits back that much further.
I used a die grinder to open up a spare set of stockers to fit these. With a carbide bit for aluminum head porting, it took maybe about 30 seconds to open each up to fit nice and snug. Went much easier then I thought. Now I just have to undo the lens again to fit them from the right side. If you separate them and then just place the lens back loosely, it reattaches at least if you leave in a hot trunk L.

I think Bill melted the lens was because of the smoke lenses. Play with these with the H7 bulb, the housing gets hot. But probably not much more then a typical sealed beam light. HOWEVER, putting my hand about an inch in front of the light while on, the photons will burn your hand in a matter of seconds since the light is so concentrated right there. But when I put clear plastic right if front like my hand was, the plastic was barely warmed up. Some window tint started to shrivel up. Real test will be once I get them back together and wired up in the car.
Hope this helps. Could probably post some pics of lights and how they fit is there is interest.
-Hank

Got the kit on ebay. It was like 126 plus 20 shipping. These come with ballasts. There are many more listings with out ballasts for about 88 buck plus shipping (good for the H7 try) or if you have hids already like you. Almost all ship from china except a couple from the states but the price is almost double.

They all look like they come from one manufacturer there. Took more then a week to get but less then two. Only had one issue, mine was missing the glue for the lenses and they warn you that is special and not to use any other. Was willing to buy myself locally but could never get it out of them what it was. She sent a picture of two blank white tubes. How the heck can you ask for that in a store???? Finally when I ask for a the manufacturer's contact number, they quickly shipped out two tubes. Else they wanted to ship one via regular mail/boat that could take up to a month.

Search ebay on HID projector H4 and you'll see them all listed. Most say only 6K and white halo's but it depends on the kit type so email them first. I think with the H4's you can get pretty much any combo of K's and halo's. Orange would be cool as an extra parking or turn signal light.
I'll try to snap some pics tonight if nothing comes up.

these it?

I'm wanting ones that don't come with ballasts since I already have a set of ballasts and igniters.

Yep, that's them. Different seller, maybe, unless they just go by different names. It looks exactly like my kit and is even the H4 version in the pictures. These are from Hiking... Mine were from OMG... like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PROJE...item1c0c8bb96d
OMG had posted answers to others about temperature availability. Probably a coin toss.
Arent you running the hella 90mm modules? Whacha got planned for these?
