Default ICM, symptoms when going bad?

Hello. What are the symptoms of this when it is going bad? Starting weird when warm? Dying in gear?

suddenly dies when warm is a symptom. trouble starting while warmed up. It can get heat soaked and needs to cool off. or just gives up completely.
Do you think yours might be going/gone bad?

I had a dramatic loss of top-end power. No problem starting or dieing when running with my experience. Call your local Auto Parts stores to see if they have the capability to test ICMs. Both the Advance and O'Riley stores in my area do.

The test the parts stores run on the ICM does a series of several tests, so I would figure that they can die in more ways than one. Just either make them test it enough to get it hot, or take a lighter and lightly warm the metal bottom of the ICM right before having them test it.

I bought my 96 Caprice 9C1, and it wouldn't start. First thing I changed was the ICM, and it fired right up afterwards. Even on 2 year old gas. I didn't know the parts stores could test them. I should have mine done. A guy on Buick forums was having starting issues, and it turned out to be the coil. You can do a test of those yourself, with a multimeter. But I don't know how, as I have never done one.

Thanks for popping in guys. I am still having the funny starting problem that came with the car. When I found that my oil leak was coming out of the lil' tube @ the bottom of the opti, I thought I had it solved. So I changed the opti (and the timing chain while I was in there). Car definitely felt crisper/faster. But still the lame starting problem. Before that I changed to a Walbro pump & changed the filter.

I must admit that advise was given to me on checking the EGR system, and I have not done that yet. I have yet to find the canister & check stuff out.

Mine was also getting sensitive to cold humid mornings (would not start). Let it sit a few hours and it would start.

My ICM died suddenly one day. Would not start, but you could see a spark if pulled the coil wire. Replaced it, and the car fired right up.

The parts stores in my neck of the woods (Advance Auto and Autozone) do NOT have the ability to test ICMs.

Thanx Sherlock. Mine is doing the opposite. In the morning, it fires up w/just a click. After I drive for a while, the starter needs to spin for like 2 seconds straight. But if I start it right after turning it off (when warm), it starts right up.

I don't know if it is the ICM.

Default ICM and Wire Wiggle Test

Hello ALL:
The SSuperWagon has a similar provacative start, cut off, will not start. Then Start up for no reason.

Hot or Cold made no difference.
Same behavior.
When ran it ran normal. Until it stopped.
Fuel Pressure was fine.

These were the things my Mechanic did.

The mechanic did wire wiggle test.
Mechanic got the car to start.
One of the problems.
The Tandem Connectors on front of the Coil.
Pull off and slightly twist the Pins. Reinstall.
They were loose and were additionally Tie Wraped tight/

The ICM was replaced anyway.
Discovering water behind the Finned Coil Plate.
Cleaned up everything and put on fresh Diaelectric Grease
The ICM Connector was fine

We are testing it again tomorrow.
So far the Car is runnng ok
No frustrating NO Start.
Then for Start and Run.
It now starts every time.

BUT going to be retested tomorrow. COLD.
Will report after tomorrows tests.
