Tried another pci slot yet?

If you accidentally bumped the network adapter during the sound card install you may have unseated it partially. When you fired up the computer with the half-seated card you could have damaged the card or the pci slot (i've seen both).

he said it was imbedded into the MB so not sure how ^^^^ that can happen ?

as suggested i would have boot off a USB drive or CD-rom with fav linux flav
and tested the NIC that way to rule out it was bad/flaky in about 5 min.
that would have told you if you have a HW or a SW problem...that's step ONE.

Years ago,on my old comp during the boot process (running Win 98SE) the screen would display a message saying to enter "setup" press so-and-so key. Pressing it gave you a blue screen with menu options and one of the selections let you enable certain devices on the board. Maybe that's where you need to look and see if it is disabled.

Okay, well problem solved...somewhat... I bought 8 of these towers in perfect working order with XP already loaded for $5 each at a resale shop today. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Compaq-dc...#ht_598wt_1163 The ones in the link aren't mine, but most of them just might end up on ebay lol.

So to sum it up, **** the PC I originally posted about, it will be cannabalized for parts, and **** Vista too.
