I recently had Chad at Golen start work on my 396 long block for my 96 RMW. My question is in regard to camshaft selection. We've got it narrowed down to either the Comp 466 or Comp 467. Chad says either will work good with the 467 making more power for sure. I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with either camshaft and how they'll preform with our heavy cars. I'd go with the 467 but I was wondering if the 466 might be a better choice because it might have alittle bit more low end grunt. Thanks !

Car passes Calif. smog test with no voodoo, just drive in and test. The tune has a great deal to do with this also. If emissions are not your concern and you want a more aggressive idle, more power in upper RPM than the 467 On a note about your stroker build, have Golen use extended main cap studs (Miloden) on the 3 that hold the windage tray. You can use the stock tray but need to use 1/8" spacers to raise the tray away from rotateing assembly if re-using the 3 stock extended studs. The Miloden you just use a nut under the tray and one over it at a height that allows clearance. There are also aftermarket windage tray you could use but my $.02 is run a windage tray. The pic is with the stock extended studs with washers. You also need to add the spacer between the tray and oil pump bolt also.

Thanks for the advice. Emissions are not an issue but drivability is so I think I'll go with the 466

My idle with the 466 is by no means "stock" but very tame. Just enough a "car guys" ear would know something is there. I have a stick car so I can have a slightly lower RPM idle than Auto but nothing "lopy" at all.

And what's the compresion ratio of the motor?
And what torque converter will you run with it?

That's a damn good question.
You'd like to thing that Golen would adjust the CR for the cam (decking the block to the 'optimal' height)......but that'd probably be asking too much..... KW

Defintely the 467.
It will be more pump-gas friendly and will give up little-to-no bottom end in a 396 with that healthy CR. The 466 is too small for that CR in a stroker. It's more suited to a 350/355 with stock-to-mild compression. Edit: Sorry, I thought that build sheet was from the OP. So..........I guess he needs to verify if that's what HIS engine is being built to.

The OP will have to decide what his priority is regarding max HP potential or a build more suited for "street" driving conditions...where 6500 RPM area is not often used.
the 467 will make more HP...but at a higher RPM than the 466 reaches its max HP smaller cams in "stroker" motors work. Some have even used the Longenfelter 211/219 cam. All comes down to what the owner feels is best for his use.
