Default Commuter car

Hello everyone,
If you were possibly commuting 500 miles a week. What type of car would you consider? The criteria is fuel economy, reliability, comfort and safety. Lastly because the drive would be a mixture of rural, highway and city driving I want an automatic transmission. As much as I would like a new car, the car would most likely have to be a one to three year old car.
Lastly budget would be max 15k

Thanks a lot.

That would not particularly gas mileage friendly, though.

There are occupations that travel around a region, you know, so moving may not help. My mother did just that, traveling around to various small-town clinics in the nearby counties to see patients. It'd be easy to put 500 miles on a car while being centrally located.

I'd go cruze or maybe even spark if you can get them for that price.

Fiesta is nice too. Saw on the most recent top gear that they have a 3 cylinder 1.0L turbo in the UK that gets 65mpg with 120hp. I'd rock that for a DD.

late model Impala. I bought a year old used one for my wife a few years ago for hauling our son around. Comfortable on a long drive, pretty invisible to the PD, decent mileage. Been very reliable, no major issues.

The thing I notice about the newer ones is the lack of shoulder room. I feel like I'm sitting in a cockpit and I don't prefer that. The previous generation is not a great car, but it's a really good cruiser.

Everyone has an opinion. You need to take your set price, go to autotrader.com and filter that price, mpg, and body style. Then cut that list by makes and models you won't want. Then test drive. Then read online reviews. Then decide.

2000-2003 VW TDI. Will pull down 40+ city and 50+ hwy. They do require some maintenance but if that's taken care of timely, they run forever. They can be had for well under 10k. Visit TDIClub.com
