There is a listing in the B-Body parts catalog
for a V6 4.3L engine in the '92 & '93 police (RPO: 9C1) and taxi (RPO: 9C6) Caprices. The 4.3L V6 was not offered in the retail '92-'93 Caprice. The RPO code is LB4 and the 8th digit VIN code is Z.

The V6 4.3L shares many external parts with the V8 5.0L & V8 5.7L. Even the distinctive '91-'93 Caprice and Roadmaster square, black plastic air-filter housing. The 4.3L V6 itself resembles a 5.7L V8 missing two cylinders.

My question is, has anyone seen a V6 '92 or '93 Caprice in person. Do they really exsist? Or are they like the '94-'96 4.3L V8 (RPO: L99) wagons, listed but fictional?

As a side note here, the B-Body has had six-cyliner power before:<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>'59-'62 235cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~135 gross HP<LI>'63-'64 230cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~140 gross HP<LI>'65-'73 250cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~150 gross HP, ~110 net HP<LI>'77-'79 250cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~110 net HP, RPO: L22<LI>'80-'84 229cid, 3.8L, 2BBL V6, ~110 net HP, RPO: LC3<LI>'85-'89 262cid, 4.3L, TBI V6 ~135 net HP, RPO: LB4
i have seen a 94 or 95 with a 4.3l v8, i can't remember rigth, but it was a caprice, is like the dealers has listing parts for a 2 door caprice from 91 to 96, i never seen a 91 to 96 2 door caprice from the factory, i have seen a modified 4 door caprice to a 2 door caprice in a magazine, years ago

I have that engine in an 88 brick but I am pretty sure it wasn't put in the much heavier 91-93s. It gets good mileage but I'm getting a 350 Ramjet asap.

YES I have seen ONE and one only. They do exsist. Although it is listed as a police option I have only seen them (on spids) in 9C6 cars. The one I saw was in a junk yard. It was a 93 9C6 and it had a 4.3l V-6. I checked both the VIN and the spid to make sure it was true.

I found my copies of the '92 9C1 (police) and 9C6 (taxi) Caprice brochures.
The '92 9C1 does not list the LB4. The '92 9C6 does list the LB4. I don't have a brochure for either the '93 9C1 or 9C6. Anybody got one for sale? :D

From what I gather in the '92 9C6 brochure, the LB4 (262cid, 4.3L, TBI) was an option, the LO3 (305cid, 5.7L TBI) was standard. In '92 taxi form the power trains were:<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>Standard: LO3, 4L60, GM8 2.56 axle, 170hp @ 4200rpm, 255ft.lb. @ 2400rpm, 17/26 fuel economy<LI>Optional: LB4, 4L60, GU4 3.08 axle, 145hp @ 4000, 220ft.lb. @ 2800rpm, 18/26 fuel economy
The 9C6 got many of the 9C1 parts:<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>HD frame<LI>8.5" ring gear axle<LI>Engine oil cooler<LI>1st gear lockout<LI>Green silicon hoses
Since the two-door B-Bodies were mentioned, jut a little note on them. Two door Chevy B-Bodies were available from <UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>'59-'82<LI>'84-'87
No factory two door Chevrolet B-Bodies in '83 or after the '87.

I'll confirm what Chris McCabe said -- we both saw it. It was a 9C6 (taxi) with TBI.

This brings to mind the 77-79 Bcar (Caprice or Impala, not sure which) that I saw that had the old straight six in it. - Ken

From what I've learned since I started this, the 4.3L V6 (LB4) was only available as an option on the '92-'93 9C6 taxi package. I've changed the thread name to reflect this. The V6 listing is now:

<LI>1st Gen B-Body '59-'62 235cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~135 gross HP<LI>1st Gen B-Body '63-'64 230cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~140 gross HP<LI>2nd and 3rd Gen B-Body '65-'73 250cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~150 gross HP, ~110 net HP<LI>4th Gen B-Body '77-'79 250cid, 1BBL Inline Six, ~110 net HP, RPO: L22<LI>4th Gen B-Body '80-'84 229cid, 3.8L, 2BBL V6, ~110 net HP, RPO: LC3<LI>4th Gen B-Body '85-'89 262cid, 4.3L, TBI V6 ~135 net HP, RPO: LB4<LI> 5th Gen B-Body '92-'93 9C6 taxi only 262cid, 4.3L, TBI V6 ~145 net HP, RPO: LB4

Chris and Ken comfirm that the '93 9C6 LB4 exists. There is a forum member who owns a '92 9C6 LB4, perhaps he'd like to chime in.

Thus the mystery of the V6 round-body Caprice is solved :D
