I'm baffled. My 94 RMW with 4l60e will only start in 2nd, (will shift into 1st manually or at full throttle), exactly like my 1956 Buick wagon. But, it will NOT sneakily shift to a higher gear on the highway, Giving me around a 60 MPH top speed, but about 7 MPG...The HVAC computer isn't working, nor my speedometer on a regular basis. VSS problems? I hate that crossmember. I may have to get out my Sawzall and welder, and narrow that thing.

Now this may be something from replacing my ignition switch at the base of the column...I don't know. There may have been a couple wires that didn't get re-connected. Way too many down there to see...

You may have to adjust the shifter position switch, and/or the shifter linkage.

Fred, You might advise me on where a shifter position switch would be. This is a 94, and it's appears to be positive mechanical linkage from the shifter arm to the transmission. Satisfying little clunks when moving from gear to gear. Moves smoothly from P to N to D, and down through 3 to 1, but only actually using 2 and 1 when manually shifted. All I can figure in my head is it's electronic, or some kind of leak. It's a rebuild but with about 350 miles, it started to show this behavior, after a lot of work on the front of the engine, water pump, Optispark, power steering pump and lines. As you well know, a lot of stuff had to come out and off. Then the ignition switch on the column went toast. And yes, I should have taken you advice and pulled the whole column. I don't fit well down there.

The position switch is at the bottom of the steering column. You could have bumped it when installing the ignition switch.

I would download eehack and get a programming cable to see what’s going on in the sensors feeding the PCM. That’ll tell you a lot.

where are you located?

I'll take a look. The pages of the old FSM are taking a beating.

Well, I bit the bullet, and bought a hundred dollar laptop on Ebay. Whay I didn't do was look at how long the shipping would be...2 to 4 weeks. From Canada.

LOL.

I'll eventually get this worked out. In the meantime, I'll finish up the 4L60e in my Blazer.
And why are those ALDL cables so dang expensive?

Thanks for everybody so fsr for their assistance.
