This coming summer I hope to install 6.5's in my 96BBB. It's 100% original and would like to avoid cutting or drilling holes. Should I surrender to the fact that I will have to trim the opening to fit the magnet?

Hard to answer this question. Every speaker is different. The higher wattage or efficiency a speaker is rated at, the bigger the magnet will get in diameter or depth.

If you search template on this forum you will find a 1/2 template mentioned. It might make the difference for you.

You might find a shallow speaker if you shop around.

As a guess if you just want to replace OEM speaker shop around. If you are going high power you will probably need a spacer and a cutting tool.

Aftermarket speakers may sound different with OEM radios as the OEM sometimes has boosted bass to make the OEM speaker sound better.
