Hi all I am going to upgrade my rear speakers. I know that 6x9s will fit but will factory GM grills stay in place or should they be removed? should the insulation around factory speakers be replaced ?I think i will try and pick up a set of name brand 6x9s from ebay say polk or sony. Thanks

The factory grilles stay. The foam baffles stay (if they're not completely demolished). The thin dust cover on the inside of the grilles is probably rotten out, so rip it off and replace it, if you want to. Don't just go with a brand name. Choose good speakers that fit your needs. I recommend Infinity Reference 3-ways. They are a bit on the expensive side ($120), but they sound fantastic. Also base your decision on whether you connect the speakers to an external amp, or to the head unit's built-in amp. I heard a lot of good feedback about Boston Accoustics for system without an external amp. I never heard of anyone who liked Sony Xplod speakers. If you're buying on Ebay, make sure you're getting a warranty.

If you've still got the Delco AM/FM/CD player, then there's not much power there to handle any new speakers you're putting in. Might want to think about replacing the head unit and do a speaker swap at the same time. Extra $$, but well worth it. And Boston makes a fine line of speakers that will fit our cars nicely. ;)

Hey SSGUSS
I installed Polk 6x9's in the rear deck using the factory grilles, and they fit perfectly. I laso installed 6.5" Polk's in the door's using the template. Everything fit perfectly. I too am using the the factory C.D head unit, and I am happy with the sound. :D
