Hey everyone, I'm having issues on my 94 roadmaster.

Yesterday afternoon I went to the gas station, waited in line for about 30 minutes, and got gas. Pulled out of the parking lot and got about 3 blocks, and as I was turning on a side street it just died. No cutting out, no stumbling, just like the key was turned off and the dash lights came on.

It wouldn't restart, or make any attempt to. Towed it back to the house 1/2 mile away and set to diagnosing. Went to the passenger side fuel rail and found the service port, and it has fuel pressure (Not an accurate reading, i know but I don't think this is the issue).

Sprayed some starting fluid and it started and ran for a few seconds. Thinking i got some watery gas, I poured a bottle of Heet in it this morning before i tried anything. Still wouldn't start, but unlike yesterday, it wouldn't start with starting fluid. Pulled a plug out, and had my dad hold the plug to the block and it has no spark... I don't think using starting fluid killed the opti spark, because the last time i tried to use it (prior to this morning) it would still start on it.

I installed a new opti-spark in October of 2013 because the old one with 188k on it was starting to run poorly. 2 weeks after, the sun shell in the trans stripped and it was parked until around July when I put another transmission in it. Car has been running fine and it has roughly 192k miles.

I'm not sure if the optispark croaked or what. It was a cheap one from Oreillys, but it does have a life time warranty.

The trans I put in it was a rebuilt one out of a 95 van. I reprogrammed the PCM and ran the extra wire for the lockup, and it has worked fine since. I have had an intermittent "service engine soon" light (Which i assume is the CEL for this) but recently it has been on less. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but i wanted to give all the info on what I have done to it recently just in case.

If anyone has any information on what I could check or has had similar issues, I would appreciate it. I just find it odd that it happened right after I got gas..

Thanks!

Sudden death would seem electrical, as first thought.
Do you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on?
Maybe something simple like a loose/bad Optispark harness plug, coil wire, injector harness connector, fuse?

Did you check the code? It could give you some insight into the issue.

Sorry for the late response. Was quite busy yesterday.

The fuel pump is running and shuts off after a few seconds. It's about 7 years old but only has about 40k on it.

I checked all connections and fuses. The only one blown is the one for the ABS.

I haven't checked the codes yet, but I will. (That would be the logical thing to do first, but I forgot that it would read it's own codes out to me)

I just pulled the coil and ICM and I'm going to take it to oreilly's and see if they can test it. Once everything is back together I'll check codes.

Thanks for the replies.

Just for good measure, I went to autozone and had them test it as well. Tested bad. Bought one from them, put it on, and still nothing.

I read the codes but I don't know what to make of them. I looked at a few lists and they only go up to (-04).

The codes I have are these:

-05, 159 (checked again and had 149)
-08, 70
-13, 62 (57)
-16, 125 (119)
-17, 128
-18, 112 (114)
-19, 128 (130)
-20, 03
-22, 103
-23, 60
-24, 12 (13)
-26, 62
-28, 144 (141)
-29, 20 (23)
-30, 101 (92)
-31, 97 (90)
-34, 128
-35, 128
-36, 04 (11)
-37, 61
-38, 05

The numbers in () are ones I got the second time I checked.

I don't expect y'all to check the codes for me, but if anyone has a complete list or knows what any of them mean, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

The first 4 don't show any codes.

I will verify again after the battery charges that I don't have spark, and if I don't, I'm going to change the optispark. I haven't tested the coil ( I'll read up on how to) but I will.

I read that if the "service engine soon" light comes on and stays on with KOEO, then the PCM is fine. That same thread said that if the 'pass key' light goes out, then it's not the VATS system causing it. That rules out both of those.

The only thing that I can think of is that there was some kind of rotor failure or something of the like.

Thanks for the input.

Optispark was the culprit. Back up and running now.
If you're running one of those cheap Cardone optis with lifetime warranty from the parts store, be prepared for it to crap out again soon. The reliability of those units is terrible...
