Never thought this would be such a hard item to find...
Lost a center cap (stock/polished) from an OEM 5 spoke 17" wheel. Found a suitable replacement but there was no retaining clip (holds it in place).

Searched high/low but can't seem to find any reference to the actual nomenclature or part #. Obviously can't mount the cap w/o it.

Any ideas of how to find/substitute/fabricate much appreciated.

just pick up another cap. They are about $20 from people here or on eBay.

I believe you are looking for Stock Chromed Center Cap for the Impala wheel that has also been Chromed?

If so, I used a set of these and frequently see them up on ebay. they mount just like the stock caps do with plastic fingers that retain it to the rim.

The only physical difference from stock is that the center area where the badge would go is a little larger (I think it was 2.75") and is also recessed a little deeper. I just had badges made up and then mounted a plastic 3/16" thick disk to bring the badge up a little more level.

I do remember a thread here where someone took a stock cap and was able to remove the satin finish which was some sort of cover on the cap. Once removed, the cap polished up nicely and looke very similar to the Chrome cap I linked. I cant seem to find that thread for you though.

Found that link to modify a stock cap.

My searches could not find it based on the info I gave. Not sure how remembered it was a MrBBody that did this mod, but found it that way. Anywho, here you go....

Great solution to the wrong problem. I HAVE a replacement cap. It doesn't have the retainer ring. That is what I'm trying to find.

Can you show us a picture of this ring? I have a bunch of New Center Caps here and I do not see any retaining ring on them anywhere?

I wonder if he is talking about the ring thing I found my my RMW caps. I thought the original owner added these though.

$20 for a used OEM center cap? Point me in that direction FAST! Even the ebay one looks good, but don't need chrome.

As Mike asked, what retaining ring? Mine are one piece and snap into place. That is why I suggested getting another cap.
