AC compressor metal on metal sound

604 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  fbi9c1
95 RMW is making a rattling metal on metal sound when the AC clutch is engaged. I have heard it once in awhile, but couldn't pinpoint the sound, now it is louder, and I have found it.
Is there a way to fix it, or do I require a new compressor?
The confusing part is, when I turn on 'vent' on the electronic climate control, the compressor still cycles sometimes. Is there a wire to pull or swap that will prevent the clutch from operating until I can get it fixed?

thanks,
dave

there's a wire @ the compressor you can unplug. if you can't reach it unplug the dryer (may work).

standard fix is to replace the clutch. but it being that old i would replace the compressor and dryer.

good luck
You can get by fine by just doing the clutch. It's about $70 in parts and an hour labor. No need to replace things that aren't broken. My 95 compressor works fine at over 200,000mi.
and I use it a lot.
