Hi everybody. Planning on purchasing a water pump and have a question. Before anything, I did search and have read plenty of thread but still have a concern.
There are currently 2 AC Delco water pumps that would work in our cars:

  • AC Delco 252-700
  • AC Delco 251-555
The 252-700 I've seen around $100 while the 252-555 is ~ double in price.

We know the 252-700 is made in China and has worked well for some members. My question is this: Is it cheaper because it does not include the gaskets, the thermostat and its housing, and the coolant temperature sensor?
From the pictures vendors post in their ads those are the only differences I see. For the forum members that have purchased the AC Delco 252-700, could you guys let me know if it's just the pump?

Also, assuming it's just the pump, what is the AC Delco or GM part for this sensor (mounted on the front of the water pump) in case I have to buy it separately? I know there are other sensors (i.e. on the side of the block) but I am getting confused which part number belongs to which. Is it AC Delco 213815 (GM 10096181) the one I need?

I will appreciate your help.

Thank you
Frank

The 252-700 is just the waterpump, and gaskets,
The 251-555 is the waterpump, gaskets, CTS, t-stat and t-stat housing.

The CTS (Coolant Temp Sensor) is an AC-Delco 21377

Unless you believe your CTS to be bad there's no need to replace it BUT if you reuse it DO NOT put any sealer on it or it won't work.

sensor

Thanks 4x4high...I did notice that AC Delco 21377 has a white/greyish jacket/sleeve (for the lack of a better word) as can be seen in this pic:

The one in front of the water pump is black as in this picture:

Does it matter? I know they have different functions (ECM and gauge)

I came across this sensor in my search: AC Delco 213-928

Yes, that AC Delco sensor 213928 has a 2 way male setup and can only be used with a specific connector not found on the Caprice or Impala's. The correct CTS is the AC Delco part# 21377 although you could make the other one work but the correct one is only 32 cents more and you don't have to purchase an additional wire harness connector to make the 213928 part # work but it is listed that it will function but only if you purchase the harness connector-part# PT1798 which retails for a whopping $25.79 so that's not a smart choice!!!
