I'm a complete novice about towing. I have H&R springs/Tockicos shocks/Hellwig bars/Hotchkiss arms on my 96'9C1 with a 285/40 17x9.5 set-up. I want to pull a tandem-wheel 2-bike motorcycle trailer with it. The gross weight of the trailer will include the two bikes at ~540lbs ea. and the trailer. Has anyone pulled that kind of weight or set-up on a similarly lowered/equiped Caprice/Impala, and if so, what did you do to keep it managable? Is it even possible? I was thinking air-bag rear spring assist.

I tow a 21 foot I/O, total all up weight is about 4500 lbs. I dont think your bikes should be a problem. ;)

I did put in a set of the airlift bags, I keep 'em at 20 psi, and like the stiffness they provide.

thanks bbodyguy. does the car handle 'funny' w/o a load w/the the air springs at or less than 20psi? the reason i ask is that i won't be towing that much, but i'd like to have the option of towing. my car handles wonderfully (to me) w/my set up now. any other pointers/advice/experience? thanks!

I am interested in this also.

I've got a tandem axle car hauling trailer. I don't use it frequently, but when I need it...I need it
.

I don't suppose the weight of anything I would tow would be over 5000# (including trailer). Is a caprice or impala capable of this type of towing ocassionally? I'm sure the factory would never recommend it...but realistically, is it possible?

With trailer brakes of course. A tranny cooler too. What type of suspension upgrades should be performed to make this type of thing safe?

thanks
Clem

P.S. I don't have an impala yet, but it might be a good alternative family car, since my family may soon outgrow a standard cab pickup and I don't like extended cabs ;). Camaro's aren't kid-friendly (safe with car seats) and my Merkur XR4Ti can't tow...

You can let most of the air out when you dont need them. Buy a $10 compressor from walmart to adjust when you need it. I leave them pretty full, I like the slightly raked look and the firmness.

I've got AirLift bags inside of some Intrax springs on the '94. It doesn't handle any differently when they're deflated than the '95 which only has the Intrax. When they've got some air in them it makes the rear noticably stiffer (to the point where I run them with hardly any pressure).
