It has to do with the security chip in the keys--the chip that it reads from, and won't start without.

It should come on right at startup, and I had read before that the longer it stays on is a sign that the chips are getting worn, so maybe it's the same deal if you're getting the light coming on while driving.

The other common name is the VATS system, and it's something that can be de-programmed via a PCM tune, if you want to eliminate it, and some do because their keys are getting older and worn with time and use--and if the chips don't work anymore, the car won't start. Just a basic security feature.

Well thats good to know, do you know how much a new set of keys would cost? Or if it would have anything to do with the battery in my remote? because i know the battery in my remote is just about dead, i have to point it right at the snesor, and have to be within like 2 feet of it....

Wipe the key down with some rubbing alchohol and blow some air into the cylinder to clean it out. Hopefully it's just dirty and that'll take care of it. You don't want it to leave you stranded, so get it cleared up asap. If it Faults when you go to start it, you won't be able to.

I replaced my factory ignition keys b/c of the same problem. I just got a set on ebay for like $20.00 and then I had it cut. No need to program, atleast not for the 94 models (obd1). Hope that helps and good luck man!!!

Yeh, I see them on ebay all the time. They have the chip on the key, you just have to get them cut.

WAIT A MINUTE?! You can disable pass key by getting a PCM tune?

Well, not really--I didn't look anything up before saying that, so here's some threads that tell more:

Again, I'm not sure on the subject, so just search for "VATS" in the PCM thread or someone else will chime in.

I got a new set of keys made at the dealership for $23.00

Just make sure your Pass key ignition was not changed (since they go bad).. then it is hard for them to figure out what voltage chip you had. All they know is the voltage your car had from new with the vin.
