Due to a mistake on my part, I've got to change wheel bearings on one side of the Impala. Not a big deal really, but here's the rub:

These are Duralast rotors that I purchased because I was unable to drive the races out of the rotors that had been on the car. I'd planned on having the rotor turned then replacing bearings / races. and it appears that I'm in the same boat as I was before - the outer bearing race is shrouded from the back, so I have no way to drive it out.

Am I missing something or can you really not get the bearing races out of the Duralast rotors?

Thanks!

Not 100% sure on the Duralast rotors, but I can't imagine the race being permanent. I had to replace the races on my old front rotors a while back and took them up to Firestone and they were able to press the old ones out and new ones in. Surprisingly, they didn't charge me anything either.

The bearing races are hardened and tempered. The remainder of the hub is cast iron or mild steel. The bearings have to be inserted, because they can not perform the heat treating in place. The aftermarket parts are basically the same as the OEM parts, so they have to make them the same way. You should be able to see the line where the race and the hub touch for verification.

I can see where the races are separate, my problem is that I'm unable to drive the outer race from it's position due to a shroud behind that race. The only thing I could think of was hooks or maybe if a plate or two would fit between the back of the race and the rest of the rotor to pull / push the race out.

On my other cars I've always been able to drive the races out and back in myself. My Impala is the only car I've been unable to do so. I thought maybe it was a money scheme from Autozone to discourage proper bearing replacement. I asked while there the other day and he'd said some are non-replaceable (races), but then again, some of his other answers didn't impress me.
