I have a 95 caprice with intrax springs. Looking for the best shock for the cheapest price. I know the bilsteins are about the best on the market, but just can't afford them right now. What's the best for a tight budget?

Nice screenname..

Run a search on the Monroe Severe Service shocks. I think they are real good on pricing for their performance on our cars.

How bad are your current shocks? I would save for the Bilsteins.. It's well worth it. Because of cost I did mine two at a time..

Thanks for the help. I really want the bilsteins but I just can't see spending the money. I searched and found some part numbers and prices on the Monroe SS shocks. The threads I found said the shocks were less than $150. They must have gone up since then because I checked O'reilly's and Advance Auto, they're both at $45 each. Any ideas on where to get them cheaper? Just bought a house and man every dime counts!

I think my SS shocks were like 30 each for the rear, 40 each for the front. Look on rockauto.com. there prices are way better than others!

I just bought some Monroe SS for my roadmaster a few weeks ago. They have gone up to roughly $45.00 each. They are stiff as hell on my roadmaster but not quite that stiff on my impala. Not sure if it is tha height diff. Or just tha fact my imp shocks are a year old.

Ok I've been searching some old posts and found a thread comparing the Monroe SS to the Bilsteins. Looks like I need to either save the money or sell a body part and just get the Bilsteins to be happy.

I looked up eshocks.com and they list the Bilsteins for $269. But I'm confused, they list the Bilstein for a 94-96 Impala SS as a "Heavy Duty" factory setting. The ones for the 91-96 Caprice say they have a "Sport" factory setting, but they have the same part #. What gives?

I love my Monroe Severe Service shocks, and I'm definitely a thrifty guy too, haha. Very pleased with mine, but if Hosspala can hook you up with a sweet deal on Bilsteins, then go for it.

I haven't heard of the Monroe SS's, but I have the Gabriel Ultra 9C1 shocks on my 94 FWB and wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. They have done well for over 25K miles.

$28 each at Autozone.

Front: B46-1104
Rear: B46-0929

Those are the ones most people are running.. Thats what I have and I'm very happy with them.

Even the shop I had install them commented on them being one of the best shocks they've ever seen..

I have the Bilsteins in the front and Monroe Severe Service in the back. All I can say is the Monroes are WAY STIFF. Good control though.

Stiff is what I liked on the Gabriel Ultras. I'll bet they are the comp for the MonroeSS's. Being I have warranty from AZ on the fronts, but the rear are old tires AC Delco Air Shocks, I need new air shocks for the rear. Any recommendations that are decent on cost?

The Gabriel Ultras gave up pretty quick on the front of my car, replaced them with Monroe SS may not have as many miles on these yet but am still happier. Happy enough I have the Monroe SS on the front of both cars.

Are the Gabriel Ultras the 9C1 shocks? I was thinking about using them. I have the Monroes on my other car with ST springs and I dunno if I like the ride, because the car sits on the ZQ8s.
I was gonna get the Gabs because of the warranty and because I can walk into the store and get em....but now...seeing people talking about the SS shocks again, has me thinking.
