Brake Parts List / Technical & Maintenance Information ---old sticky

24236 Views 18 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Navy Lifer
List taken from THIS thread (props to Spartus and other contributors--me too!).

94-96 Impala SS and Caprice 9C1 (4-wheel disc brakes), and other applications where noted.

Vehicle RPO Applications:

B19 (sedan)

- RPO JA9 (front) heavyweight disc 9C1 (wide caliper & thicker pad combination)

- RPO JB9 (front) lightweight disc/disc WX3 Impala SS (WX8 Caprice SS--export)

- RPO JL9 4-wheel disc system 9C1 & WX3/WX8 REAR disc brakes

B35 (wagon)

- RPO 1A2 special service spec disc/drum brakes (front same as JA9)

All RPO JM4 vehicles as noted below includes 91-96 B/D body cars with ABS

NOTE: "OE" notation indicates Original Equipment part that is the same item installed on the vehicle in production. ACDelco (ACD) Durastop product line uses GM PN's, however it is aftermarket-sourced, and may not carry same warranty as OE parts--most Durastop brake parts are sourced from Brake Parts Inc, corporate parent of the Raybestos line, part of Dana Corp. ACD Durastop pricing is generally lower than that of true OE parts. Some parts are not listed which have been discontinued, with no GM stock available. For rear disc brake components, inquire.

6. Power Stop brake information

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This post is to clarify past remarks made about brake rotors provided by Autospecialty or Power Stop by brand name.

Over the years I've commented on brakes, I have made every effort to provide correct and useful information.

First, there are numerous posts in the Brake Forum that refer to Autospecialty rotors. With the passage of time, the brand has changed, and the recommended rotors--the Heavy Duty "95" series (front rotors use PN which includes "95" as part of the number)--are now carried under the Power Stop brand name.

The listing of available Power Stop products, both front and rear, applicable to the 91-96 B-body, based on items carried by Summit Racing for a 1996 Caprice (also fits Impala SS and other B-body cars) is shown here. (this link may not remain correct in the future--bottom line, search Summit for Power Stop)

One statement that has presented much confusion I need to clarify--in referring to Power Stop (or Autospecialty) HD front rotors having "thicker" cheeks--approx. 10% thicker--I never clarified that the OE rotor thickness is maintained at 1.04" (26mm) EVEN though the cheeks are thicker. The bottom line is the vane air channel is narrower as a result of the thicker cheeks.

If you visit the Power Stop website, you'll see a great emphasis on slotted & drilled products. I continue to recommend when using any stock-replacement rotors (from any source) on the B-body, the PLAIN rotors should be used. The Power Stop website really pushes rotors with slotted or drilled surfaces, and has added cryogenic treatment to further "gild the lily".

Here you will find more about Power Stop brakes. Note that AR9501 and AR9502 PLAIN HD direction rotors are no longer available

7. Disc Brake Lubricants - Ceramlub, Pastelub, etc

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use of CERAMLUB and PASTELUB for brake lubricant during maintenance

An area of maintenance that comes around pretty much annually, usually AFTER the winter wet & cold has worked its magic, is the greater likelihood of having problems associated with lack of lubrication and/or sealing of the slide pins, on both front (no seals) and/or rear OE disc brakes.

Unusual wear, noise, strange brake pedal feel, and other problems are symptoms that point to problems with sticking caliper "float" mechanisms, often due to poor-or lack of-- lubrication. Like it or not, the potential for this cannot be denied, and it needs to be on your "do" list, if you haven't checked for these conditions or haven't done any brake maintenance lately.

Other brake designs (ie. fixed piston) are not immune to the need for lubrication, but the floating caliper components are critical. Those of you with aftermarket systems will understand what needs to be lubricated on your systems.

There are many brands of brake lubricant on the market, and everyone doing their own brake work may already have a favorite, based on 'what works' for them, so don't consider this as a plug or a must-have, rather as a bit of information about CERAMLUB, a product that I've used with success, which I believe is explained very well by the manufacturer as to the reasons it works. It is available from Bendix and from other sources under the actual manufacturer's label.

I've posted about it here previously, and wanted to bring the whole matter of proper brake maintenance, including lubrication, to everyone's attention, to encourage all of you to think about what work may be needed on your car as the harsher seasons of the year approach.

PASTELUB is another product offered by GWR (but not by Bendix). It, too, is a high-temp (2400 deg F) lube that contains molybdenum (moly), and is recommended for metal-to-metal surfaces.

According to GWR, CERAMLUB is most effective in metal/rubber interface uses, which means rear slide pins, due to the boots, and on front caliper bushings and bolts. It's rated to 2800 deg F, and if you have room for only one brake lubricant in your tool box, this one will work for both it's intended use and for the metal-to-metal areas that PASTELUB was developed for.

As mentioned HERE Ceramlub is also a good product to consider using on the ABS sensors, which have a nasty habit of "locking in" to the knuckles in front.

Bendix is not the only source of CERAMLUB, which is a Swiss product. GWR , in Florida, has information about this product, and a web search will give you a bit of additional sourcing info.

Advance Auto Parts is a Bendix vendor, though I'm not sure how easy it may be to purchase this product there, or what sizes besides the "tub" (large jar) are available. I've communicated with both Bendix and Advance Auto about carrying this product, and the response is "we're working on it".

The Bendix Ceramlub PN is BL-1. You can also order it HERE until Advance Auto Parts starts offering it.

CERAMLUB and PASTELUB are also available from KORE3, and I can supply these lubricants if unable to locate them elsewhere.

REAR DISC BRAKE UPGRADE & CONVERSION OPTIONS USING OE PARTS

Some of you know I've put alot of thought into what can be done to the brakes on the B-body. One area I've especially focused on is the rear disc brakes. There are now 4 applications that I've got parts and information on that I frequently send to individuals when they ask me about what they can do to their car.

Here are the summaries for each possible application/configuration:

1. Upgrading existing rear discs on the Impala SS or 9C1 (wheel-size sensitive), using C5/C6 Corvette components. This can also be done on Buick Roadmaster sedan or Caprice sedan with rear drum brakes as a conversion.

2. Converting a B-body sedan drum system to OE B-body rear disc

3. Converting a D-body (Fleetwood) drum system to OE B-body rear disc

4. Converting a B-body wagon drum system using C5/C6 Corvette components

1994-1996 IMPALA SS/CAPRICE 9C1 REAR BRAKE UPGRADE
This system upgrade consists of C5/6 rotors and calipers, and special bracketry to properly mount these components in place of the standard B-body rotors and calipers. This upgrade retains the existing park brake design, does not change track width, and will clear 17" Impala SS wheels.

This kit can also be used to install the C5/6 disc brake rear axle conversion into non-9C1 Caprice or Buick Roadmaster sedan applications with the correct wheels. Axle width varies by application. Wheel-opening clearances must be verified before installation to ensure the axle used, choice of wheel, and any spacer requirements do not cause interference between the wheel/tire and body.

Contents of the kit:

2 C5 rotors—12” (305mm) diameter, 1.025” (26mm) thick, directional, HD design, available plain, slotted, or cross-drilled and slotted, 5” wheel stud pattern, works with Impala SS/Caprice 9C1 rear disc axle parking brake system

Option to use C6 Z51 (13” or 330mm) rotors is available—17” (OE SS) wheels minimum required.

2 C5 or C6 rear calipers—available in black or red

2 new backing plates modified for this upgrade OR exchange/modification of your backing plates.

2 new caliper mounting brackets, slide pins, boots, and fasteners

Caliper mounting bracket adapters, spacers, and fasteners

Park brake components assembled to backing plates (new)

Brake pads—OE (and ACDelco), PFC, Hawk, EBC, Satisfied, and a number of other brands—FMSI D732 spec, including semi-metallic, carbon-metallic, and ceramic friction materials.

All necessary hardware, gaskets, boots, fasteners, guide pin lubricant included.

Gear lube/additive and brake fluid not supplied with kit.

THICKER C-CLIPS FOR AXLE RETENTION & REDUCED AXLE END-PLAY are available.

Additional minor components are required for drum-to-disc conversions.

Not home at the moment, can't provide length (it's about 2" under-head), thread is M12x1.75--use grade 10.9 ONLY.

I can ship 4 to you later in the week, PM me.
I can measure the lenght, the thread is what I needed. Thanks for the offer, but I'll just order them from work.

We go thru alot of hardware at work and the bolt supplier is very generous when it comes to my personal needs :D

I hope I can start on this soon. Is this something that should be done by a ASE professional?

It never hurts to have some experience, but it's not really THAT major of a deal. There should be plenty of B-body folks in Tidewater you can lean on for help.

If you lack tools, or confidence, by all means, find a good shop--whether they've got ASE certification or not. It's a bolt-on deal.

Bill I know I wont hurt to try lol its my brother lol whose been fixing GM cars since he was 7 years old and now at the age of 22 he doesn't really do much Mechanic on my car like he use to! He says if he does my car it will be on jack stands for a while since school and work and him becoming a Police Officer soon is holding him back .

Is there a complete kit out their minus the rotors ''since I'll be getting Bear rotors'' that they sale at a very low price?
I have all tools + my ASE certified Mechanic next door neighbor to keep a look out for me who fixes cars/Navy Jets for a living.

The kit I can put together doesn't include rotors.

14. Rotor (2) uses rotors for 94-96 Impala SS or Caprice 9C1
19195722 Rear rotor GM Durastop 18A656 OR EQUIVALENT"
(alternate GM sourced cables)
18034273 - CABLE, ACD Durastop, rear, park brake (LH) - without equalizer
18034274 - CABLE, ACD Durastop, rear, park brake (RH)
Both of the cables have ends that are too small to fit over the nub on the brake rotor. They will need to be hollowed out a bit.

Also if you plan on doing this, do yourself a favor and buy a cable removal tool. If not you will wish you did... I know I do!
OE vs aftermarket cables

Yes, you've hit upon an issue I was aware of for some time....several people have purchased the ACDelco cables and found that they required a massage to fit over the park brake lever ("nub").

As for releasing the old cable from the backing plate (compressing the retaining tabs), a properly sized socket can do the same thing as a special tool that you may never use again.

Since I've been building rear disc upgrade and conversion kits, I've made it a point to have some OE (production) park brake cables on hand--they're discontinued, but were still available through Vintage Parts--since I consider them the superior parts to use if I could get them, because of the fit problem you have pointed out.

I also mention in the listing that the ACDelco replacement cables, at least (no idea about others) don't include the equalizer bracket, meaning you have to re-use your old one--if it's still good to use. It's not a separate service part.

I do have new OE rear park brake cables available if anyone is looking for them--sold as a pair only.

I thought of using a socket and to be exact 13mm. However, I didnt have a 13mm deep well in my collection of tools.

I used a step bit to massage the hole for the nub. I worked very well, but a pair of Vice Grips will be needed to hold it from spinning.
Make this thread a sticky again, or add to the existing "useful brake info" sticky, please!

This particular thread is intended to be informational only--a question on a specific abnormal condition should be addressed as a new thread with the subject line describing the problem.

Many of the problems (most, in fact) have already been the subject of previous threads--it's just a matter of finding the right key words and doing an "advanced search" where it's also possible to search by a specific member name as well as topic & key word(s).

For example, using the words "high pitched", no specific member name, and searching the Brake forum, there are a total of 10 threads to review--the answer to your question may or may not be in any of these threads, but if you have not reviewed them, that is the place to start.
