C6 GrandSport Brakes install

Figured I would throw up another thread for what I am getting into within the next few weeks.

I guess the car really didn't need brakes, then I got some killer deals on somethings and figured, oh well I guess I better just do it.

After talking with Tobin at Kore 3, great guy by the way, about the brake setup and I was going to modify to make work on my car, I decided to start hunting for a set of C6 Vette 6 piston fronts and 4 piston rears for calipers, 14 inch rotors in the front with 13.4 inch rotors for the rear.

No I was able to get a complete caliper set off a wrecked 2010 grandsport (same calipers as the Z06 silver instead of red) for pretty cheap and very low miles.

So I picked these up and began hunting down parts to see how cheap I could get away with doing this.

Here is a pic of the calipers.

I looked for sourcing of the rotors and I was going to go with Kore3, but I found a set of rotors for less than 1/2 the price of the rotors from Kore 3, no the machining for the 5 on 5 bolt pattern isn't done as well as the center bore needs to be opened up, but I have a local cnc shop that can handle that for me.

Here are the rotors that I got for the install, not GM but who cares really, as long as they work well, which they should. Hell he boxes with the rotors showed up today, the boxes with all four rotors was like 110 pounds total. I will shoot a comparison picture, old to new tonight when I go out and tinker a little bit with it. They are big, that is for sure.

I am going to have to figure out the parking brake setup as I am not going to pay 800 bucks alone for that setup, I am sure that I can figure that out.

So hopefully I can get this done rather quickly and not so costly, I think that I have most the parts, there are couple of things that I will get from Kore3, but I am truly on the fence about the hubs from them, not that they aren't great, I may just make my own from an old set of brakes, not sure yet.

Stay tuned.....

brakes

Hey Mike sounds like ur getting there cant wait to see pics.
Paul.
Man your gona have to keep us posted step by step.... id LOVE to do this mod as long as i have some kinda instructions!!!

If you got money to blow, just call up Tobin at Kore 3, piece of cake he can sell you everything that you need, I am just piecing it all together to save a little. :)

Yeah it is getting there, I am running out of time though, I need to get it done, pisses me off that the measurements for the rear inside spot face, I guess you could call it are wrong, I wish I would just had him open it to at least 6.625 or 7 inches and call it a day. Oh well I will get it figured out, just have to find the time to do it. Oh by the way, precursor measurements on the CPP master cylinder looks like it is going to fit perfectly :)

Thats awesome cant wait too see pics of all your hard work.
Paul.
Thanks man, being honest it has been a damn struggle to find the time. I think that I decided to just make my own brake lines as I am deleting the ABS anyway, I would have to cut up a new line set and make it work. I have the benders and stuff to do the job, let's see how many leaks I have to fix ;)

Ok you guys wanted pics. :)

Anyway went out this evening, ok early morning and worked on it a bit, got all the bolt circles drilled for 5 on 5, test fit the rear rotors again and they sit flush I was looking at them odd or something, so 6.5 inches to open up the spot face on the back of the rear rotors is perfect.
Also mocked up the new master cylinder that will be going on , fits like a glove. Plus all the proportioning valve, metering valve, etc. is all within the unit, makes the installation look a ton better. I am removing the ABS anyway, and I need to make up the lines as well for that. The rearend that I bought for mocking up the rear brackets is giving me hassles coming apart, I had to soak in PB Blaster for the night to see if I can tear it apart tomorrow.

Anyway here are the pics.

Rear rotor mocked in place

Picture of the front rotor after machining and me drilling the new bolt pattern

Rear

The machining on the inside of the rear rotor

A nice action shot for you drilling the 5 on 5 bolt pattern

Testing fit on Kore3 hub

Tobin's Hubs are art for sure

The CPP master cylinder mocked in place, this is the MCPV-1, 1 1/8 bore unit, just in case you wanted to know. :) Also the lines will exit the bottom of the unit for a nice clean look.

That is all that I have right now, more later :)

master cylinder.

Hey Mike looks awesome. How was the master bolting up too the booster any fitment issues.
Thanks Paul.

Not really, the only thing it is pretty tight to get a wrench in there and tighten down the nuts for the master as the body of the new master is quite a bit thicker, but other that that bolted right in place.
Damn Mike... you doing a hellava job.
Thank you sir, about to go out and see what I can tackle this evening, well it is midnight, the kid is sleeping, so I figure I can get a good 3 hours into it :)

More pics for you guys, the fronts are essentially done, still have to go get the big ass allen wrench that I need to tighten the calipers up, but it looks like they are going to be centered with no shims. Working on the rear brakes to have a fully functioning parking brake feature, difficult yes, but doable, hell yes. IT is more time than anything, but I think that I have a plan and I am going to go with it. I will keep the parts that I am using a little secretive right now as I want to make sure it is going to work, no need in posting a bunch of pictures if it is going to fail in the end, I need to order up the brake line for the whole nine. Lines are pretty bad on the car, so I think that it would be best to replace them, as well as I am deleting the ABS.

One with the pics, spindles all done with some fresh paint on them, frame to come next before all is said and done.
sanded down and waiting for paint

all painted up

Hubs packed with high speed low drag grease :) well the bearings anyway.

Hubs installed on spindles with brackets as well.

Rotor and caliper temp installed to check fit

Looking good. How's the spoke clearance with that shallow of a rotor? Guessing these won't clear the stock wheel regardless given the 14" right?
Hey Todd,

Thanks, If you are referring to a stock Imp rim, too be honest I never tried, but I would assume that they wouldn't fit as the bulk of these calipers and of course the relative size of the rotor being 14 inches. But you never know though, I just never tried. If you are talking the Z06 rims they were made to clear these calipers and rotors from the factory, but I am sure that you are aware of that.
Hey Mike,
Did you have any luck getting that rear axle apart? I feel bad that it is causing you issues and can buy it back if it is too much trouble for you? I was just trying to help by selling it cheap but I forgot about rust? Let me know.

Nah man it is cool, a little heat, a BFH took care of it :)
Any reason for deleting the ABS?
Matt- you are the second one that has asked this just today.

Reason, well there are a few, but I will try to explain as I have been back and forth in my mind on what to do.

  1. When I installed the T56 in my car close to 3 years ago now, on 94's the brain is under the dash and well it isn't the easiet thing to relocate under there. So I pulled it out and actually extended the wiring for it to try and use it again, and I did when I had the 3.08's
  2. When I put in the 4.10's I didn't really want to spend extra on the reluctor for keeping the system functioning.
  3. Since I am replacing the lines that takes one step out of the picture that has to be routed to and from
  4. the wheels and tires that I am running will throw the light anyway and it is going to be failed

As you can see by above I weighed each and every one and removing it came up winning. And actually after I disabled it the car stopped better anyway, not saying that disabling ABS on every car would do this. With it disabled I had been in rain and mashed on the brakes hard, on the SSBC rotors and pads that I had on it, and I NEVER locked it up, even standing on the brakes.

With the new binders, maybe, but that is yet to be determined you know. There is my theory anyway, makes sense to me why I would just get rid of it, it only a summer car for one thing, and I guess it can go against the resale of it, but at this point with the mods on the car, who cares, if I was ever to sell it and the deal fell through because of it not having ABS, I didn't need to sell it anyway :)

I could not agree more on the deleting of the ABS and am planning the same thing on my 1994 but another reason to do it is if you add a line lock in it makes the job much easier if the ABS is not involved. Just my 2 Lincoln's.

I am happy the BFH took care of the rust. I felt bad that it gave you trouble.

Mike--Hamilton Chevy
Ah man no reason to feel bad, I got one side apart enough to do some mock up of the parts that I have to make for the parking brake assembly, I will get the other side dismantled soon, but I figured I would let the PB Blaster and Tranny fluid soak into loosen the rust a bit ;)

Yeah there are ways around the line lock thing, and I am sure that Matt will reply to that ;), it was more of a scenario the pros outweighed the cons. Worst case, if the car locks up the wheels all the time, then I will put it back in, but that is really doubtful that it will.
We drove hundreds of thousands of miles BEFORE they ever invented ABS and the cars were just fine so for a summer car with no snow and ice to deal with the ABS is just one butt ugly thing under the hood that needs to go when making the engine compartment nice for a show car. Not to mention that wiring mess under the dash and the little bit of weight savings as a side effect.
Yeah very true. Not that I would ever road race my car, but if I did there aren't many of those cars that have ABS on them. All in all I just want my POS to perform well, stop well and look alright doing it :)
