Looking for some info here. My 96 SS was a sold to ship to SoCal car, and I am thinking back in the day( summer 1996 when I was a not yet 16 year old with a major obSSesion) that I remembered reading that the sold in California cars had a little bit different emissions setup than cars sold elsewhere in the country.Something like differerent pcm programming and different egr maybe?I can't remember and so far my search hasn't netted much.Any input is greatly appreciated.

CA Emissions

For 1996 all the USA market Impala SS and Caprice cars are On Board Diagnostics II (OBDII). The only difference between a California car and a Federal car is the Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI) sticker under the hood.

The odd ball is if you have a 1996 Canadian B-Body, they are not OBDII, and CA DMV isn't going to let you register it within the state.

In your case, being in TN, you have nothing to worry about :)
