So the cheap pot metal stud on my 1.7 farad cap broke off. Enough was left that I could actually unthread what remained in the actual cap.

The question is does the built in volt meter do anything other than read volts? Is there a reason I couldn't just wire everything direct to the cap itself?

The capacitor does the work, the voltmeter is a accessory and is not needed. Just another parasitic drain on the battery.
