I Had a system hooked up to my car about a month ago. My question is the capacitor, is it suppose to stay on at all times or not? I had not been in my car for a couple of days, then went to get something from the trunk and noticed it was on. The amps are off but not the capacitor. Thanks in advance.

There should have been a remote wire connected to the cap. just likt the remote wire connected from the Head Unit to the amp, the same wire should've been connected to the Cap. :D

All i've ever run with caps is power and ground wires. Never a remote turn on wire, not quite sure what that would do either since the cap just stores voltage from the battery and the turn on wire turns the amp on. The digital cap i have in one of my cars "turns on" when i open the trunk and shows the current battery voltage but then the display turns off after about 10 seconds with it wired that way.

The Cap I'm useing right now is a Lightning Audio and it has an input for a remote wire. The Cap only turns on when I turn on my Head Unit.

yeah i have one of those in my caprice. it's not a digital top though so there are just the positive and negative terminals on the top.

I scored it off the web for cheap. It's Cool for now, but I've been planing on going with a second Battery in the Trunk with an Isolater.

Am I trying to compete? No, but when I wanna show off to some friends I'll know that my KX850.2 will be seeing 14 volts for a strong output :D The Birth sheet reads it will put out 940 watts with 14 volts
I'm liking that :D

Instead of an isolater, consider using a solinoid. You will have a voltage drop across the isolator, of about .7 volts, i.e., no where near the 14 volts you't amp is spec'd with.
The solinoid would only switch on when engine is running, or a switch. I would suggest a timer activated switch if that were the case.
The best setup might be the solinoid closing when the ignition is on + a timed switch.

you cant turn a cap on and off like a switch.

thats like saying that your car battery is "off" when your car isnt running.

the only thing that the remote wire is for, is that cute little digital display.


oh, and i hope that you dont think the cap is keeping your amp at 14 volts for more than about 1 second at a time. 1 farrad caps are a waste of money. if you are going to do something like that, get a second matched battery, or something large enough to actually make a difference, like a BatCap.

Thats Real, With the Cap my Amp is NOT seeing 14 volts, maybe 13 with the car running
. I do want to do something like a second matching Battery. Right now I have a Red Top under the Hood, debating on wether to go with another Red Top or do a yellow top in the trunk

a cap is basically a small deep cell battery. its jsut a storage for juice for the amp when it needs a big current draw... so when the car is off yeah, juice should flow to it and back to the battery to equal out... its just like having 2 batts hooked up......thats what i have though. no issues.

I stand corrected, I just went out to my car, popped the trunk and yeah, the Digi display is on. My appologies to all for my error in info

and keep in mind, the cap being (like stated) a deep cycle battery... when its power is used up (which happens in a very short period of time) it then becomes a drain on the other battery, and can at times make your voltage reading at your amplifier actually lower.


thats why not a single SPL competition car will have any caps in them nowadays.

10+ years ago, everyone thought you HAD to have caps in a high power system. now we know that they are in fact a drain, and nothing more than a selling gimmick for companies to make extra profit.

Pimpala SS, I see you know your stuff. I have a capacitor also but have had it for quite a while. Maybe on my next system, I won't use it.

I've been around car audio my whole life. My dad owned a bunch of stores back home, and i was there every single day. I also worked in sales/install for over 7 years.

Well the reason your cap was on when you opened the trunk is that a cap detects when there is a drop or peak in voltage which causes the readout to turn on. This is normal for all digital top capacitors.
