Carbon Fiber / Kevlar

We have teamed-up with a company who specializes in carbon fiber and Kevlar. In fact, many of the parts found on the Lingenfelter packages come from their shop.

Is there any interest in carbon fiber or Kevlar engine covers, fenders, hoods, etc.

Let me know. They are looking to expand into another market besides the Corvette.
Thanks.

Tad, my ACE hood is I think 30lb with primer and paint. (maybe a few lb lighter I forget).
I hear that stock is 65lb.

I'd be in for a totally stock looking hood.

I spoke to him tonight. I will be dropping my Solstice off next week. They are going to do the hood, fenders and engine cover. My Impala may actually get back on the road this month and I can bring it over to him to leave for hood and fenders. They are excited about both vehicles. It will take some time but maybe we will have something ready for Christmas.

Hood would be nice

Fenders : I don't think the weight savings will be worth it. I know I was shocked how light the stock outer fender was when I had my fender bender a couple years back. Easily under 10 lbs each.

I know it'd be sorta ricerish
, but I think a CF trunklid might be another spot where you could see some "easy to bolt on" weight savings for a reasonable return on $$$.

Beyond that : CF structural bumpers, CF radiator support, and CF inner fenders would be a few I can think of (although the inner fenders aren't that heavy either...)

Bring them a Roadmaster sedan and tell them to make one stock hood with vents and I'll buy it. Not sure anyone else would though

I agree the outer front fenders are already light. Where I see the benefit is in palm print dents and dings not happening. I like the radiator shroud idea. The trunk lid would be fine as long as it's made to be painted. I told the owner the B-body community would prefer a paintable CF rather than having the finished CF look because the rest of the car would not match. He said it would be easier to make, cheaper and stronger because they will use an aerospace grade CF mesh and not have to worry about a gloss "3d" cf appearance. Am I mistaken on this? Would everyone prefer the visible CF fiber look of these panels? They said they can also do sway bars and strut bars.

I'm gone. More later.
Thanks guys.
G
I would think most people would want painted CF - hood, fenders and trunk lid, anything out of sight.

A "3D" inner fender would be a nice visual under the hood though.
G
No struts = no strut bars

As for swaybars, do the rate calculations first. If you can get the rate to be "a bit stiffer than stock" with a good weights savings, there could be a market for it. I know I'd love to have the swaybar rates I have now while taking 30 lbs off the car.

Agreed : the "gloss" CF trunklid would be a no-go for most in this community. Although I'm sure there'd be some of course...

BTW on your Solstice Dan, the Solstice pretty much spanked CS at the Solo Nationals last month...a class that has been ruled by the 99 Miata for the last few years. I still don't fit into one (I tried), but am pretty impressed by them. Some of those crazy folks in CS (a "stock" class) were squeezing 285/30R18 tires onto the stock width 18x8" wheels  (which you have to use stock width wheels in stock class). Looked like the tire was about to explode off the rim at any time from the side, but looked MEAN from the back :D

Can you make bumpers out of carbon fiber?
I'd be interested in fenders, doors and a trunk lid. A trunk lid with a spoiler molded with it would be cool too. How about carbon fiber inner door panels?

I'd like to see the original hood line disappear. There is a good cutline in the fender.

Make the hood and tops of the fenders a 1 piece clamshell design and the bottoms of the fenders and the inner fenders another piece if possible. Make it where all the stock underhood parts will still fit in stock location, but smooth out wherever possible. In "mass production" this will probably end up over $2000 per set. Actually probably closer to $3000. But compare that to the cost of a new stock hood, stock front inner and outer fenders from GM and you might be surprised...

Actualyl, on the hood, I would slightly increase the height of the step in the middle, but not quite a cowl induction design. Sorta like the Mustang has done in the past.

Another part that I would like to see is a new strong smooth cover for the AC vents/windshield wiper cowl. When I'm working under the hood I always end up putting my hand on that area and it isn't very comfortable. Plus it would help in the looks department :D

Trunklid with molded in spoiler (based on the SLP spoiler design!) would be awesome! CF inner door panels would be sick! CF swaybars would be really nice over the "all or nothing" approach that drag racers have been doing. CF core support.

Of course the price is going to keep going up...

im in for a stock hood replacement, ill have to figure out a different intake system again, buts its all part of having a fast impala, CHANGING EVERYTHING, i would rather not have hood vents if you can get them either way though
G
I'd get a hood with z34 louvers in a heart beat. Put me down for one.

Jose
G
I'd take a hood with the vents also.
G
Wow every one has already chimed in on what I liked!haha but just to make sure I'd like to see

- Fuel Rail Covers
- How about a cowl hood induction "bulge" on our hood....like how a Chevelle SS has?
- A hood would "heat vents" or "louvers" would be a nice option
- Some smooth bumpers would be ill!
- Door panels would be nice too

I really like the idea of the stock replacement. I also like the indea with the heat vents along the side like Dan's hood had in the pics- I don't know how that is with the rain as a DD though. In regards to cowl- my personal preference is not the long 2" cowl that starts all the way out at the grill ala this hood:

But I would prefer the lower 1" to 1.5" cowl that starts mid way like the Chevelle SS's had, ala these:

My vote is for a smooth wiper cowl and maybe a c/f grill shell.
G
carbon fiber version of a ram air hood would be nice id be all over that.
G
Im diggin the cf front and rear sways mentioned by ed. Can you imagine the amount of weight saved there plus the added stiffness of the cf units. Sweet if you ask me. Hook it up Dan!
G
I'll see what they can do guys.

Ed, I haven't had a chance to get the Sol to the track. I know it handles like a little go-kart and would love to see what it can do. i barely fit myself. Once I'm in it's fine but getting in and out took me all year to get use to.
