Need some help on a recent problem. Ever since I got my 96 RM wagon last year (has the factory cassette/CD unit w/Concert Sound II), my CD player acts erratically. It will take a CD in, then it seems to never be able to track it, and gives an Error 20 on the display while at same time, ejects the disc. Sometimes it does play OK, but then starts to skip, miss, and distort, finally does the error code. The owners manual and FSM say to let the unit cool down, and then try to play the CD again later. This does no good w/my unit. Anyone have similar issues?

Thanks,

RS

take it to a electronics repair shop or a local car audio shop and ask them if they can take it apart and clean the laser lens.

My clarion that i've had for over 3 years was acting up really bad and not reading a lot of cd's and skipping easily. Cleaned the lens and worked great for about 6 months...back to square one lol. Ah well...3.5-4 years of service, can't complain
time for a new toy lol

The factory palyers are extremely modular. I for one have a player that plays fine, you cant adjust the volume. You could take the cd player out of that and stick it in your buicks radio. (I am assuming they look similar on the outside, i.e. slot at the top of a din 1.5 radio). I'll sell my defective one for $50?

Not to drag this out, but I’m having similar problems with my OEM CD head on my 96 SS. Put a CD in, about two seconds later with ¾ of a turn, it’s spit out with an “Err” showing on the display. Last night put in a Kensington Drive Guardian CD cleaner, did the same thing. Spits it out after maybe ¾ of a turn and Err. Was working great, no problems then this. Open for suggestions. Would like to try and fix this myself…? Thanks.

it seems that most of you guy's problems is a dirty lens or a misalignment in the laser. this is a common problem in gm units, kinda like the old cassette players use to break belts constantly.(ever have a gm tape player that would click when you put in a tape?)
the solution is to find a good repair shop to solve your problems, or replace your unit.
speedometer service in carrolton, texas is a good shop as well as ships radio service in shreveport,la.
find a good tech or service writer at your dealership and ask them, you'd be suprised howe many "new" cars roll off the lot with a remanufactured unit in them.
hope this helps.
