Alright, this is a fire marshalls car. Its got 77,000 miles, oil was changed religiously and the car is real nice. It shows that someone took pride in it. My dad has a Kenworth truck dealership and they want to trade the car in as a down payment on a new Kenworth water pumper truck. I can buy it from my dads company for $1800, so I definately want to get it.

So here are my questions.

What kind of gas mileage can i expect from this car?
What kind of 1/4 mile times can I expect with long tube headers and a good dual exhaust, cold air intake, posi, and 3.73s?

quote:
What kind of gas mileage can i expect from this car?

expect around 300 city*, 400 Highway*, In stock form.. (*conditions and varibles apply here, IE: how hard you drive the car, etc.) I always tanked up around 275 average, when my car was about 95% stock (1/4 tank left)

I ran 14.4s with pretty much this list and a few other things. (tons of Automatic tranny mods) Did I mention that was with a bad opti that wouldnt rev to over 5100rpm, so I was letting off to half throttle for the 2 shifts? :D
Expect Mid to low 14 second runs with those mods. (Again weather and driving style applys here.)

Hope this helps. $1800 for a 77k miled car is a SCREAM, especially for an LT1 car
:D

I'd be all over that car if I was local to it...buy it, throw in a pair of new oxygen sensors, do the couple of mods you're looking into and enjoy it. You should see around 20 mpg...I used to get 17 as a low when I drove REAL hard and up to 23 24 when I was just cruising on the highway.

I get 22 low and 26 as a high now (which is nice on the wallet) but my car has a LOT of money invested in making that happen. They say headers are worth a bit more gas mileage too as well as a freer flowing air intake (which you can make yourself for the cost of a piece of PVC, a hockey puck and a quality cone filter). Plus those are all mods that will help the 1/4 mile time.

Bne stock you can expect low 15's to the occasional very high 14. Just a couple mods though along the lines of an air intake and an exhaust, and a couple of free mods like the throttle body heater bypass will have the car running easy mid to low 14's in the low to mid 90 mph range.

Just make sure you see 2 exhaust pipes and the 8th digit in the VIN says P and you know you're on the road to fun with that car. If you see one pipe or the 8th digit in the VIN says W, or both of those, then it is the smaller 265 inch V8...still a great engine in terms of durability and efficiency, but the car won't be fast at all.

I can't understand why you are concerned about gas milage and 1/4 mile times in the same post. If it has an LT1 engine, expect <15 sec @92mph or higher. I would think that with a good running engine that you will see 17mpg city and 24 hwy. If you want to save money at the pump, then this is not the car for you. If you decide to pass on the deal, please let me know as I will show up with cash and drive it home.

It is a great price. But do you really want that low rear axle for daily driving? I would consider a higher gear or leave it the way it is (Not sure what the default is). Of course with overdrive it shouldn't make a difference once you use overdrive.

Jake,
BUY THE CAR! You won't be disappointed especially for $1800. You not going to get the gas mileage as the Honda but expect between 17-23 MPG depending how hard you drive it. I have a hard time being conservative with THE car and average around 18 MPG.

I dont get out on the high way too often. 60mph is about as fast as I go where I live and I work locally. I was wondering if it was gonna kill me on gas or not. Doesnt seem like it will be too bad. I was asking about the mods because who doesnt like a good running car? I mean, the gears, which Im not toally sold on anyway, are the only thing that wouldnt INCREASE the fuel mileage. That and the stock caprices are too quiet for me, I like to be able to hear whats going on in my car. Posi as a mod? I cant think of one single reason not to want a posi rear. Basically I want a comfortable car, that wont kill me on gas, but has some balls when I step on the gas. I dont want a dragster race car, but I dont want to feel like Im driving my dads 91 305 powered caprice wagon.

Also, I know its an LT1 car, I checked the vin, and the pipes, and the engine code on the rad support.

She definatley needs paint though, its BRIGHT red.

put a set of 3:73 gears in then. You will probably see an INCREASE in gas mileage around town. (due to having to use less of the gas pedal for all the stop and go to get up to speed.

Seriously, I noticed around town driving was MUCH better with gears.

But once gears go in, then you want an exhaust, then you want headers, then you want a T56. Good thing your getting it for only 1800 bucks... :D

Well yes to everything but the t56. Im not a big fan of adjusting or replacing clutches. Did it once in my beater Accord. Never again.

Also, what rpm would I be running at 80 with 3.73s and stock sized tires?

there Is NO comparison, to a Front wheel drive to rear wheel drive clutch change. Trust me, I could go change the clutch on my T56 in less than 2.5 hrs, I'm willing to bet somebody it could be done.

Anyways, when I had my auto, 80 with stock tires (Im going to use my rolling "stock" was a 255-50-17. "stock SS size"

I was turning around 2850-2900 or so at 80. I rarely cruised at that speed with gears and an auto, it was more like 72-75, that is like 2600rpm, not much lower, but sounded like 2k rpm's lower. :D

mygrain,
this is the worst deal I ever heard of...don't do it!!! You will be sorry. Fire chief cars are notorious for problems. Now, where exactly is your dad's dealership? :D

We didnt get the Caprice. The fire company decieded to keep it. I found a recovered theft impala that needs an interior and wheels. I bought it DIRT CHEAP too. I'll have less than I would have payed for the caprice in the SS by the time Im finished fixing it up.
