Crank No Start. Spark and Fuel Pump are Good

6019 Views 95 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  arnoldsmind
I am working on a 1996 Impala SS with 180K Miles. I have a crank no start issue. Car runs with starter fluid, but nothing after that.

I uploaded a video on YouTube to give a 1st hand look

So far: New Battery, New Fuel Pump Relay, Fuel Pump Working, spark confirm, fuel injector fuse in tact, fuel being delivered to engine, no fuel pressure at Schrader valve..

Did the HF fuel pressure tester ever get checked on another vehicle? I've had one go bad after like three uses in the past.
Waste of time. Car has been sitting for TEN years. The tank is full of stale gas, the pump strainer has rotted apart. Car barely idles and dies when he pushes the accelerator pedal. He has ZERO fuel pressure.

Yeah, you might have lead with that .
Jeez, yes. If you had mentioned that at the outset I'm pretty sure you'd have had unanimous agreement to get the fuel out of the tank BEFORE even trying to start it.

I can’t get the fitting to screw onto my hybrid. I will take the gauge home and try it on my Trailblazer.

Welp. I still don’t have anywhere to put 6-8 gallons of gas.

6-8 gallons of gas doesn't take up a ton of space, man. I've known people with that much liquor in an apartment.

The Gauge works. I'm working on the Fuel Pump now. I'll give you the pay-off today. So yeh, the car started and ran without any fuel pressure.

So if you are not planning on removing the old bad gas you are simply wasting your time. A new pump is not going to remove varnish nor will it clean all that crap out of the injectors? That is like putting a band-aid on a amputated arm to stop the bleeding.

It's best to just let them continue on the path they have chosen because they are going to regardless.

Welp, There will be a bandaid on an amputated arm. Registration is going to be $750+, and tires are going to $150-300. It's not going to be a money pit. The goal is to get it started and making it salable. I will send the next owner the link to the thread. They can take whatever action they want.

Fin.
The third line is for the evaporative emissions and runs along the right side of the frame up to the charcoal canister in the right front bumper. Common for those to degrade and fall off. Not the reason for no fuel pressure, but may cause some check engine lights and to fail evaporative emissions if that is a concern for you.

I'm guessing the accordion line off the fuel pump was cracked and probably finished breaking off upon removing it from the tank. This caused low fuel pressure, combined with the bad gas make it not run initially.

Technically it might not have been the fuel pump itself, but the hose that failed. Agreed that you did the right thing by replacing the whole assembly.

Glad that you've got it running, showing fuel pressure. Get some tires on it and don't drive it too much, else you won't want to sell it :).

Good you got things squared away, and I think I'm speaking for most posters no thanks needed for giving you grief to bust'a move and git'er done. The right way.
I don't what state you're in but the registering part has me a bit confused. Whether you just recently bought someone's car that they've let sit a decade or you're the one who let it sit, as long as you have the title and don't intend to keep it then why not just let the buyer do all that when they plate it? Just nosy.

A co-worker is flipping the house and the car was left on the property. They offered it to me at no cost, so the registration is on me. I have found that a running and registered car is more profitable and easier to sell. So that’s the “Why” behind me not wanting to do something that labor intensive.
As 'ol Hannibal always said on The A Team, "I love it when a plan comes together."

And as we say on here, "GLWS"
