Hey all, looked through this section and it seems a little light on posts. So I don't know if this has been done or not, but here it goes...

Stopped by Best Buy last night and looked at portable DVD players. NOTE: Can somebody explain why they are a cheap as $199 yet the cheapest "flip down" model that mounts to the roof was $850?

Anywho, after looking at those prices I visited a local salvage yard. For about $250 I can get the entire colsole/flip down DVD player unit from a GMC Envoy. It doesn't have all the wires going to it, but they did have a wiring diagram for it.

Anyone ever tackled a project like this? Is it more of a pain or am I looking at a good deal? Is there something under (above) my headliner that will allow me to easily mount the unit? Anything else I need to look for/think about before doing this project?

BTW, I am not 100% sure, but I think the unit I looked at will work with either plug-in headsets, wireless headsets, or can be played through the stereo system (though a set FM station).

I often wondered about the pricing myself. Lately I've seen the DVD in a bag that hangs off the front seat, really cheap. That could keep the anklebiters occupied.....

What I have done is put a 1 din DVD player above the ashtray where the package tray is. Then, I put a 5.6" screen in the astro overhead console (modified the CD holder to put the screen in it). So, whenever I get around to putting the overhead console in my car, I'll have a 5.6" drop down screen for my son to watch movies on. Only drawback with this method is that the screen can be no bigger that 5.6", and when dropped down will be a little farther foward than the middle of the car. Upsides: cheap, easy to do, looks factory, and when you close the screen up into the console, no one can tell there is a screen in there.
